quote:TG&Y Stores & W-D had an agreement to collocate stores in new open-faced malls starting in the 1960s and going into the 1980s. The stores’ trades complimented each other well. They also had agreements with some drug store chains as well; Rexall, K&B and others, sometimes independent local drug stores.
It was connected to a Winn Dixie and a K&B
All over Louisiana & Mississippi (at least) were pairs of the two stores in new facilities and the Winn-Dixie stores survived sometimes up (and even possibly through?) the recent buyout.
W-D was the lead partner in the developments; they were branded “Winn-Dixie Marketplace”.

We had a TG&Y in east Houma. My mom would let me get a pack of 1989 Donruss baseball cards every time we went shopping there. It was connected to a Winn Dixie and a K&B in the shopping center, I think.
You are correct.
That shopping center was hit by a tornado in 2000 and the TG&Y was badly damaged and never reopened as TG&Y. McCorys split up the space and put a smaller McCorys there, along with a few other stores. McCorys finally closed in 2002. The TG&Y space is now occupied by an Ollies and other stores including a Dollar Store.
Winn Dixie built a newer store down Prospect near the bridge, but that didn’t last. Winn Dixie exited the Houma market by 2003 or 04. Cannatas moved in part of the WinnDixie space, but Hurricane Ida forced it to close and never reopened. Roses is now in the space.
The K&B moved across the street on Grand Caillou and eventually moved up the corporate name change from Rite Aid to now Walgreens.
As a south Lafourchian, I remember the TG&Y in Larose. It was in a shopping center with a National Grocery Store. There was also a fancy clothing store chain there too, maybe Beal’s. I can’t remember the name, but you could get your Girbeaud jeans there. For you party animals, the Greenhouse and the Greenhouse II were in that shopping center. Mr. Cook was also there in an outparcel by the road. Eventually, Callais Cable moved offices into the TG&Y space. Frank’s supermarket moved into the National space, and the whole shopping center declined in the 2000’s. Callais was purchased by Latelco and Frank’s built a new store on 3235 in Larose. Hurricane Ida finished what was left in that shopping center and has been the process of being demolished.

Yes! You nailed it. I think there was a Bealls or a Stage between them too!

Not in Baton Rouge, but the TG&Y store as a shopping destination was always one of my favorites as a kid. The toy section a big draw, but also the adjoining 'youth' book section along the wall. I was particularly entranced by the line of Big Little Books. I got several there, including ones of "Popeye," "The Lone Ranger," and "Lassie."
The store also sold those Little Golden Guide handbooks. There was a slew of those, covering subject-matter like Trees, Birds, Rocks and Minerals, Reptiles, etc. I still have several of these. Those were so fascinating to me at the time. There was also a related line of 'Golden Sticker Books,' which covered similar material. Each page had a singular topic with a line-drawn bit of artwork (to be colored), and a square at the bottom to apply the correct sticker. The volume on dinosaurs was one of my most treasured possessions when I was of kindergarten age.

Used to ride my bike to the one on Highland; same shopping center where Superior Grill is now. Right next to it was a K&B with a pinball machine in, which me and my friends wore out.

On Greenwell Springs Rd, TG&Y was next to K&B drug store and Howard Bros was across the street. Bought so many car models from those 3 until they closed down. '83 flood didn't help.
