I used a paperclip and heated it with a torch while holding it with a vise-grip pliers on a jobsite. Old timer convinced me to do it saying a needle is too small and a lighter isn't hot enough. Worked like a charm.

Lots of great advice in this thread—and some not-so-great.

I went through this about 3 months ago. Smashed the absolute hell out of my ring finger. I took the smallest drill but I could find and just twisted back and forth until it broke through. Never felt any pain at all. The pressure relief will ease almost all the pain, but you will have to do it over again every day for about a week.

Also something to take note of is the nail falling off. Get it out of there as soon as you can. I made the mistake of waiting for it to naturally fall off. By the time it finally did, the new nail was coming in all deformed and jacked up. I would just soak it in hot water early on to soften it up and try to pry it out with some tweezers.

Use an eraser to set the depth and it helps.

Only time I haven't lost the nail was this last time, and I didn't drill it. Just let it naturally work itself out.

Small drill bit. Whatever you do, don’t use a drill. I did this a few years back and I almost passed out from the pain once it broke through the nail.

My mom used to heat up a needle and then poke it on the nail. It would melt right through the nail, and make a little hole, and allows the blood to drain out. Used to scare the heck out of me as a kid but it didn't hurt a bit.

I've used the needle and lighter method. If you're having pulsing and throbbing from the blood pressure, expect a lot of blood to shoot out when you break through the nail

Yeah man, tiny drill bit. Just roll it on your nail with a little light pressure and you'll pop it.

Dont use the drill.

Thanks for the clarification there

Damn, was really looking forward to the thread asking if you should back out the bit or push through.

se a small drill bit to make a small hole right above the abscess to drain.

By OPs description it seems more like a subungual hematoma than an abscess.

Open a paper clip, heat one end with a lighter, use it to poke a hole through the nail

Tried and true! The red-hot paper clip end will move through the nail like a knife through butter so don't put a lot of muscle behind it. Once it pierces the blood pocket you will have immediate release!

Lighter
Needle
Whiskey

It will hurt really bad but it will also feel really good. It's kinda like getting married, but the joy comes in the end instead of the beginning.

The smell of that fingernail burning as the hot needle pierces through is orgasmic.

I tried the hot needle thing last night but no matter how many times I tried, it cooled off so much that it didn’t even leave a blemish on my nail. I guess it was too thin, may need a thicker needle. It’s not quite as painful this morning but probably still needs to be drained.

Also, to those saying I wouldn’t feel the hot needle until it melts through, that’s bullshite . I in fact did feel the heat through the nail and it never melted it at all.

When I slammed my finger in a door years ago I when to my doctor a few days later bc the swelling didn’t stop underneath my nail. After he looked at my nail we left and came back with a very large gauge needle. He simply spun the needle with his fingers to use the tip of the needle as a drill. After a few seconds he got through and the pressure was relieved.

My sister and I were playing outside when we were young and she grabs a brick and throw's it at me and hit's my big toe. It swells up like a mfer. The pressure was intense and have never felt pain like that before. We had a black woman staying with my dad at the time, he was terminally ill with cancer. She heated up a straight pin, and pressed it through my nail and once it hit dead blood, I felt like I had just had a orgasm. And I had never had an orgasm.

You have to get that needle red hot. I mean it should be red when it hits the nail.

Watched a doctor drill the top of the nail on my sibling years ago. Used something like a small Dremel tool. Good luck!

It was very red hot and it didn’t do a thing. I know it was on it because I felt the heat through to the nail bed.

It’s considerably better this morning so I may just end up letting it do it’s thing on its own.
