Can heart worm, flea, tick prevention pill cause dog to shake, walk off balance, throw up?

My dog recently got his checkup at the vet and he got a higher dosage for the heart worm, flea, tick prevention pill and hours later started shaking, throwing up, diarrhea, and started to walk off balance and fell out. I took him to the animal hospital that night when it happened and all they said was he ate something toxic most likely but said it couldn’t have been the pill I gave him earlier that day.

Flea meds both topical and oral can cause seizures in dogs. I had a dog that topicals caused him to have seizures. The meds tell you not to give them to dogs with a history of seizures.
ETA I just happened to be dropping off our puppy to be spayed this AM and asked my vet about this, she confirmed the above and also said that ivermectin and milbemycin (heartworm meds) can also cause seizures, she said it was more common in herding breeds and mentioned a gene that I didn't catch. She was baffled that they told you the meds couldn't be the issue unless another reason was strongly indicated.

My Vet gave the wrong dosage HW pills... Meaning for a dog with a higher weight. I had given one dosage before I noticed it was for a higher weight. I called them and they said it wouldn't hurt my dog but gave me the correct dosage. He didn't have adverse reaction.

Dunno. Gramps used 7 Dust all over Granny’s dog. He didn’t realize it was the more potent variety.
Sassy was dead the next morning.
RIP Sassy.

Heart worm meds can kill. Witnessed one have a heart attack after a large dose of heart worm med. perky, fine, and happy one second. Gushing blood from every orfice the next, dead in 60 seconds. Watched from start to finish. Most odd, strange, sad and pitiful thing I’ve ever witnessed.
I’ll never give a dog heart meds from a vet. They are fricking idiots..

Buddy of mine’s mom had a miniature poodle back in the 90’s named Sassy. It was so old and decrepit, blind, and pathetic, he asked a couple of us to put it out of her misery one day after school and shoot it. The catch was, he had to be home when it happened so his mom wouldn’t suspect him at all of anything.
I was the getaway driver, after tossing a coin to see who got to send it, while our other buddy sat in the back of his Accord with his .22 Benji.
This thing was so disgusting and filthy that the pellet entrance “wound” wasn’t obvious at all to his mom who thought, in the moment, that finally Sassy had died of old age. Within the hour his mom had her oldest son who was, in college, and had to drive a good way over to collect the remains and take them to be buried.
Years later, we were sitting around laughing about that day and came to hear from his older brother that the “burial service” included doing 70mph on 10 East and launching it out the passenger window from the far right lane between the Michoud exit and the twin span after he’d managed enough separation from all the other traffic.
His brother’s thoughts about that night and the memorial he gave Sassy after 16 years with the family were, “I wasn’t gonna bury thaf frickin thing.

???? it’s people like you I’d like to be cornered by in an alley. Knowing your kind, there would be more to bury than just you. Scumbags never travel alone.

Yes it can......several years back we had to change flea/tick/heartworm meds bc it caused one of our dogs to have seizures........sorry I can't remember the brand. Change your brand now.

Your dog probably already had heartworms. Its a known thing that starting meds while having the worms already can kill your animal. My vet always tests for worms first though so idk what happened there

Restarting my 13 year old lab on Tifecsis threw her into liver failure..Second vet who put her down said it was a liver profile of a poisoning...to be fair she had had a round of antibiotics as well...regardless the heartworm meds threw her over the top. The blood work pre-meds showed a normal liver panel.
It still bothers me every day that I allowed him to talk me into restarting the heartworm meds at her advanced age. She had never done well with meds, I told him that, and I knew better. Many horror stories on the internet that are similar.

She had worms. Probably bad. Vet agreed to treat and get her at a maintenance level in exchange for $10k off a truck. Do the numbers. Vet knew the dog wouldn’t make it. Didn’t tell the owners the slim chance of survival in the state she was in. Wouldn’t mind seeing that frickwad strung up by his nuts either.

Yes. One time I bought some off-brand flea and tick ointment that you rub on their neck. My dog was fricked up for days, shaking, almost having seizures. I called the store and raised hell about their shitty product.
Went back to Frontline flea and tick ointment. More expensive but seems safer.

One of our dogs used to state at the ceiling for about 4 hours when we gave him trifexis. Switched him to a different preventative after that.

I hope your dog is ok now. Yes, the meds can cause adverse reactions. Nexguard and Bravecto and Proheart all have adverse reactions. Go to a different vet today if needed.

Yeaaa if a vet did that to me id be doing what i could to get him investigated

Yes. This happened to my dog on Bravecto. I took her off of it immediately, and she was fine.
