Can I get a decent car paint job for $2K?

Been shopping for an older SUV and many have peeling or faded paint.
Looking at white vehicles. I'd like to keep the vehicle til I die.
I see at Fact-o-Bake, their premium Ultra package is $2499. I'm sure they will tack on misc charges plus tax.
MAACO for $1.5K?
What about the kids at BRCC?
Anyone with a buddy that paints?

Something someone would consider a lifetime paint job isn't going to be the low-budget variety.
Peeling paint means a lot of stripping and prep before they load the guns.

You get what you pay for.
A good paint job is probably $6k for most cars. That will include removing most trim, lights, and pulling bumpers and painting those off the car, and maybe painting jambs also.
The fact o bake and Maaco jobs are in the "poor" category due to not enough labor hours to get the prep right.
But, depending on how old the car is, that may be a good fit for you.

It’s almost always going to be cheaper to just find and buy the car with a good paint job.
The MAACO and Facto Bake paint jobs are cheap as shite. They give the painters the absolute bare minimum amount of paint that would cover the car, and they have to have you in and out of the booth in a very short time.
But when it comes down to one of the biggest things that go in to a repaint is the prep work. Those cheap places are going to do the least amount they can do. Good prep work for an entire repaint can take longer than actually laying down the paint.
If it’s a color change then it’s going to look like shite unless you pay to have a show quality job.
Edit:
Are you sure the paint is faded and it isn’t just the clear? If it’s the clear then it may be much much cheaper to just correct the clear.

OP can pull all the bumper and trim pieces himself and may end up with a better job as they will put more time into prep.
When it comes back put all your stuff back on yourself. Time is money.

There's your first mistake. Most peelers that my customers paint are white vehicles.
Older Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler SUV's in white have a lot of peelers.
BTW, the latest round of peelers has been white Acura SUVs.

Not really since good materials (tape, sandpaper, primer, paint, clear, etc.) for an allover paint job should run you between $1,000 and $1,500 depending on the color.
You could buy the cheaper material for around $600, but that paint job will last around 6-8 years depending on how much it's in the sun.

How is that done without messing the underlying paint?

This may be a dumb question, as I know little on this subject, but what about a wrap? Think you can get them in any color you want.

My buddy down the street will only charge you about $350.

Clear is on top off paint. If the clear is just faded and oxidized, then it can be corrected to look new

If you're going to go the cheap route on the paint, then at least do the prep work yourself. Sand down the clear and feather edge all of the scratches.

How? My clear on my Taco is a bit rough feeling. Looks like shite.

If it's just slightly oxidized, then you can wet sand and buff it. It you can physically feel that it's rough, it's probably too far gone.
What color is your Taco?
Most of the peeler paint jobs are solid white. Many manufacturers still use single stage urethane on solid white, solid red, and solid black cars, so there's no clear on those.

The paint is coming off the tailgate of my truck and I have budgeted $2k to get it redone.

How much is it gonna cost to change registration info if you change vehicle color. Or is that really a thing. Asking tor a friend

Indigo Ink, or a deep blue. Toyota's clear is known to be shite. It's on the top only for now, although there are some spots on the hood that look like it but have no discernable feeling to the touch...smooth as it can get.

I have a 2011 Frontier with paint chipping on the front ends on the panels above the front tires. Apparently, a lot of Nissan's do this, especially white. My brother had an older car done by Fact O Bake years ago when they were running a special. It looked good for the 5-6 years he had it but he did a little bit of prep before he sent it in.
