My old Trane is still running, but I've gotten quotes on both Carrier and Ruud from mediocre 14 seer units to 2-stage variable speed 20-21 seer units. Internet research is all over the place.

Quotes for install are from $8500 to $15000.

We got a Ruud installed in December. I asked here and was told it was a good choice. No complaints so far. Seems I remember being told part of it comes down to the installer.

ETA can't remember what the details of the unit are but it was like $6500?? I can find out if you'd like.

How long are you going to be in your present house?

If less than four years don’t spend $15k on an A/C for it.

Pics of wife/SO for load calculation.

Family member in the biz told us that Rudd/Rheem is the way to go as far as warranty issues and such....Both are quality AC's.

Little Alum Wannabe is hitting 3rd grade next year. No reason to think he won't graduate high school here.

Then spend the money and get the best system available.

The tricky part is now the installation firm.

Good luck, ask for references on your specific model and then follow-up on them.

I know of a few nightmares from incompetent installations.

Go with Trane.

I'm building now and am going with all Trane. 22 seer zoned variable speed.

I work in construction and Trane is second to none.

Seems incredibly expensive.

I have an American Standard 17 seer 4 ton unit with 80000 BTU furnace.

It cost me 7000 installed 4 years ago.

In BTR.

FWIW, I got an Amana installed a couple of years ago. Good price. Lifetime warranty. So far so good.
You know Daiken owns Amana & Goodman.

There are some folks in the business who purport that the Carrier line you dismiss specifically only on association is better than Daiken products.

Always be careful with generalizations.

Do not get lost in the SEER. If you are replacing an old system the 14 SEER is going to be an upgrade. Even if you were replacing an old 14 SEER, it was probably not even running near that level due to age.

I would go with a lower SEER cheaper unit, as you will probably never realize the cost savings with a higher SEER more expensive unit.

Unless you like having the best of things, then get the more expensive unit to brag to friends.

ETA - changed SEER number, read it wrong.

You can’t get a new 13 SEER in Louisiana.

14 SEER is the minimum efficiency rating HVAC suppliers can legally sell in the Gulf South.

you are confused which brand was bad, if you got "good" advice then you were told carrier was trash and never buy it.

carrier is like the walmart brand of a/c units, total garbage only good for cheap rental properties.

get a rheem/ruud unit or get another trane unit

get a Ruud 17 seer with econet. That's the way to go. There's a prominent builder around BR, and that's all he puts in his new builds.

anything over a 17 seer and you won't recoup the extra cost.
