I say "more" because they laid off thousands last year, too.

quote:

Dell Technologies Inc. is laying off an unspecified number of employees in a reorganization of sales and marketing teams, according to sources.

According to Bloomberg today, the reorganization includes a new group focused on artificial intelligence services.

Update: One source close to the matter had told SiliconANGLE that 12,500 layoffs, or about 10% of Dell’s worldwide workforce, were planned across the company starting Tuesday, but that number could not be confirmed and may prove high. “It’s unlikely the number is that high because that would typically trigger an SEC filing,” said theCUBE Research Chief Analyst Dave Vellante.

Indeed, in February 2023, a 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission was made for a reduction of about 6,000 employees. The number of new layoffs might become more apparent when Dell files its latest earnings report on Aug. 29, which should show severance and other costs.

Dell declined to provide specifics on the layoff. “Through a reorganization of our go-to-market teams and an ongoing series of actions, we are becoming a leaner company,” the company said in an email to SiliconANGLE. “We are combining teams and prioritizing where we invest across the company. We continually evolve our business so we’re set up to deliver the best innovation, value and service to our customers and partners.”

In an internal memo, Bill Scannell, president of global sales and operations, and John Byrne, president of sales for Global Theaters and Dell Technologies Direct, reportedly told employees, “We are getting leaner. We’re streamlining layers of management and reprioritizing where we invest.”

Rumors of layoffs were swirling today on TheLayoff.com website. “Despite whatever person from corporate put in here earlier about this being a 1% layoff, it is in fact larger than that and is hitting services, sales, marketing & engineers,” one person said. “Half of my team is gone in marketing and still no coms.”

Dell has been cutting staff for at least the past year. It laid off a total of 13,000 last year, according to CRN, including the 6,000 in February 2023 and another round in August whose numbers the company didn’t specify.

So when all these companies drastically reduce work forces, how will they make any money when nobody can afford their services or whatever they are selling?

Kind of wondered that since the first exodus to cheap labor overseas almost every corporation made. But, capital often does a lot better at short term profit than long term vision.

Absolutely. “Thank you for your 30 years of service, and best of luck finding a new job in your late fifties. Please enjoy six weeks of compensation that will fall short of the 52 weeks you’ll probably need, but that minuscule unemployment will kick in soon!”

Direct pushback from the Dell employees resistance to the work from office requests from Dell corporate.

We don't want to fire you because of your resistance to coming into the office, but we can announce layoffs and hire people that will agree to come to work in the office.

Never forget that corporate cares more about their real estate and their power than about the employees.

You live in a democracy, you don't work in one.

If the company told you to come back to work in the office and you didn't, and then you got laid off, is it the company's fault?

That's a pretty good bit of mental gymnastics to blame the company b/c you don't feel like putting down your pop-tarts and getting dressed.

They decided to replace our HP laptops with Dell at my company. I’m not a fan. For one, if you’re docked and on a teams call, the microphone is virtually useless. We’ve solved that problem by buying external microphones. And the battery life is pathetic, even on brand new Dells, the battery doesn’t last a fraction of what we use to get from our HPs.

Yeah if I was a company owner, I would make everyone come back to the office. People don’t do shite half the day. They are getting their weekly massages and hair appointments taken care of though.

None of this surprises me. I have used Dell laptops for both work and home for 25 years. The quality currently is not what it was. Battery life, keyboard on laptop, fans failing, you name it. They have cut corners and it shows.

They are obligated to by....wait for it....the people who own the company and the federal law. It is unethical to waste other people's money, which is why you always see the fat getting trimmed during recessions.

It's really not complicated.

John starts a lemonade stand. He borrows the money to buy lumber, pitchers , lemons and sugar, builds a stand. Starts making lemonade and selling it. He's got the sweat equity and is on the hook for all money borrowed.

The stand does well and he's able to add a second stand and hire Sally to run it for him. He has to borrow the money to build the second stand and he invests his profits from the first stand to buy pitchers , lemons and sugar for Sally's stand. Sally's stand does very well because it's summer and demand is high, so he raises the price in order to give Sally a raise.

Summer turns to fall and fall turns to winter. Demand for lemonade starts to tank. Not to mention, people saw John's successful stand and started putting up stands of their own, so John and Sally's customer base has been diluted by competition.

John starts to lose money because he's buying lemons, sugar and paying Sally, but Sally's stand isn't selling enough to pay for her wages.

John makes the difficult decision to close Sally's stand, and since he doesn't need Sally to work his stand (since demand is low and he can't afford to pay her just to stand around), he lays Sally off.

Sally saw all of this happen in real time. She assumed that she go the raises because she knew how to sell lemonade better than anyone who'd ever sold lemonade before. She thinks that John cannot survive without her unique ability to sell lemonade. Problem is, people aren't buying lemonade in the winter so her skills at selling lemonade make no impact. When John lays her off, Sally throws a temper tantrum and goes to John's mom, claiming that John had mistreated her and demanded that she either force John to pay her whether she sold any lemonade or not or turn over the initial lemonade stand to her. Sally has no other skills and doesn't want to learn any. She put all her eggs in being a lemonade salesperson for John and expected that to last forever.

When John's mom refuses to force John to give her the lemonade stand, Sally starts to burn down the town and loot all the stores. She's angry and it's all John's fault.

John wanted to make a few bucks selling lemonade, but now he's a representative of evil capitalism because he responded to market forces.

Who is the bad guy in this scenario?
