Department of Interior Emergency Order Accelerates Oil and Gas Permitting

The Trump administration has shortened the approval procedure for new oil and gas projects to just 28 days—at most—from several years under the national energy emergency that the White House declared earlier this year.
The new “emergency permitting procedures”, per the Department of the Interior, will cover not just oil and gas but uranium and critical minerals as well. The full list also includes coal, biofuels, geothermal energy, and kinetic hydropower.
“The United States cannot afford to wait,” Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum said. “President Trump has made it clear that our energy security is national security, and these emergency procedures reflect our unwavering commitment to protecting both.”
“We are cutting through unnecessary delays to fast-track the development of American energy and critical minerals—resources that are essential to our economy, our military readiness, and our global competitiveness,” Burgum also said.
The Trump administration’s focus on developing all energy segments with the exception of wind has frustrated the transition advocacy and technology sector considerably, with Reuters reporting the climate NGO industry was already hiring lawyers to take the fight over hydrocarbons and climate regulations to court.

Until the FERC, Maritime Administration, and USACE get on board with this 28 day review process little will change. This will help but not to the extent it sounds like. It is big that BLM, BOEM, Indian Affairs, and USFWS will be expedited but those are only a couple of the agencies that have a stake in the process for larger projects.

Who wants to drill right now? Oil is currently $63/barrel. Can’t turn a profit drilling it at that price.

I also feel that Trump has had a somewhat reckless approach to the environment, but I understand his position when Asia is belching smog like no tomorrow.
We can't put all these regulations on ourselves and also compete with countries that DGAF. It's frustrating that it's a race to the bottom instead of a rising tide.

You joke but if we have a major hurricane, people are going to shout from the rooftops about NOAA cuts and EPA deregulation contributing to more severe weather.
It’s going to happen

Why should ANY permitting ever take over 28 days? Either you meet the qualifications or not. If you have prepared the proper documentation for any application, it should not take nearly that long to review.
Every administration (including the current one) is guilty of purposely delaying permits.

Exactly. US Rig count is -4 since January 1 and -36 from the same time a year ago. It's not because of permitting.

I've been saying it since the George H. W. Bush presidency. Our #1 national security issue is, or at least should be, reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

But maybe this affects the other energy sectors mentioned in the OP more.
