I'm sure no real O-T Baller shops at Dirt Cheap, but the casket has been ordered and they will soon be buried.

quote:

Dirt Cheap, a Mississippi-based chain of stores that sell returned and liquidated goods, has filed for bankruptcy protection and plans to close all of its locations.

The chain disclosed the plan to shut down 68 stores in documents filed with a Delaware bankruptcy court.

Dirt Cheap has 9 stores in Louisiana, according to the company website, including stores in Lafayette, Slidell, Hammond, Amite, Bogalusa, Houma, Bossier City, Monroe and Franklinton. A Zachary store recently closed.

According to Facebook, going-out-of-business sales have started at all Dirt Cheap stores.

For those of you have not been to a Dirt Cheap, think of a store that is 2-3 economic levels below Big Lots. They buy large quantities of returned and close out merchandise from major retailers - stuff that even the retailers can't get rid of at clearance prices - and sell it very, well dirt cheap.

Business model didn't work.

Have run across a handful of good deals on shite in the past, but the store itself is so god-awful nasty. I couldn’t even stand to go in there anymore.

Was the problem the business model or the clientele?

Interesting business model. I wonder if selling the goods in some place like Mexico would work better.

The one in Hammond has a building material section next to it. After the flood, we got very discounted cheap flooring tile that saved a lot of money. The only thing with that is making sure you buy a good bit over since you can't go back and buy the same stuff.

The clientele fit the business model, so to speak. But that is a clientele that has been hit hard with inflation pressures.

You also have to wonder if this chain had a shoplifting problem. The stores were so disorganized and messy, and the constantly changing inventory probably meant their tracking systems were not that good.

Yup. Buy cheap, sell cheap, run cheap. The people with money who you would consider "bargain hunters" started to be turned off by the mess thar the stores became, long lines, poor service, etc.

The people who have the income level to normally shop there are being squeezed.

Doesn't leave much of a customer base.

Hence why the Zachary store closed, as it happened at that location.

Ollie’s at least resembles traditional retail.

Dirt Cheap is more akin to a thrift store or Goodwill.

From what I understand, it was a bit of the business model. They ran a good business for many years around Hattiesburg, so much so that they started expanding to other cities. This was the kind of place you could find a brand new Dell being sold for $200 ("smoke damage"), single shoes or even broken furniture (literally). My sister and her family live out there and she used to find all sorts of insane deals on really good things (you had to go often and dig, but for the diligent the deals were there, this was at their original location).

About a decade or so ago I noticed she hadn't commented about some new find there in quite a while. She mentioned that it had been a few years since she had been because they weren't getting even the rare finds any longer. Apparently, at some point, something happened within the family that owns(ed) the company and they began splitting up stores between family members. None of them had the ability of whoever started the store so it eventually went to shite.

We call it the dirty chicken and we hit the one near us at least once a month. You never know what treasure you're going to find. I picked up an EGO pole saw with a multihead i can use other attachments for $50.

Eta it's like goodwill on steroids.
