Dishwasher question. Applies to washing machine as well.

When I start the dishwasher or washing machine with hot water, do those appliances heat up the water or do they rely on hot water from my water heater? It takes forever for the hot water to reach my sink so I usually let the water run until the tap water is hot and then start the dishwasher or washing machine. If the appliances heat the water themselves then there’s no need to do this. I need to know

From your water heater mostly.
That is why hot and cold water hoses are hooked up to your washing machine.
*Note Most dishwashers do heat the water.

This. Really 0 reason to run hot water to the dishwasher.

Look at the connection at the wall. If there are two water tubes, it pulls from your water heater. If there's one water tube, yet still has hot water, it heats the water locally.

The dishwasher has a heating coil but your washing machine doesn't. You're going to have to get a small booster that is placed close to the washing machine and/or dishwasher like they do for sinks. That way you'll have pretty immediate hot water.
Honestly I don't really see the issue though. The dishwasher will heat the water and the washing machine fills up high enough to let hot water run into it. Maybe not real hot but at least warm. So you're probably washing on warm. If I had to pick a spot I would put the new tankless booster by the washing machine.

My dishwasher usually just nags and complains, but no, she does not heat the water herself.

Found my dishwasher in the laundry room the other day. Then it cooked me dinner.
What brand do you have?

I am fairly certain *most* dishwashers do not actually heat the water. My understanding is the heating element is used exclusively for drying the dishes.

Depends on the brand. Bosch dishwasher has no heating element

Some do and don't, but most modern dishwashers are filled from the hot water line, not the cold water line.

You know this 100% or it just doesn’t have the traditional element? No heating element would mean no heated dry.
Most dishwashers only use 3-4 gallons of water, many people’s water lines would be cold filling it up with hot water only.
ETA: the reason I say this is most residential water heaters are set at 120* and 140 is generally the accepted minimum temp for commercial cleaning and 160* is preferred

I can tell you how to discover this on any appliance?
How many water inlets does it have?
One, as in a dishwasher? Then it heats it's own water.
It would be impossible to pull water from two sources using one inlet.

It is coming from your hot water heater.
