I grew up in texas and had never heard the term until I was in my 20s, and a friend used it. I also thought he just dropped a small n-bomb until he filled me in on the meaning.

Good rule of thumb is whether you need someone to translate what they're saying. If you understand them...not coonass. If someone translates then they are definitely coonass.

What's the difference between a jackass and a coonass? The Sabine River.

Got to agree. My now late father-in-law grew up in Mansura and lived there again late in his life for his last 20 or so years.

I can't tell you how many times he'd be awake at 5 a.m. drinking coffee with 2 TV's on with the news on both of them. One broadcasting in English, the other in Cajun French.

You realize a great portion of Acadiana is above 190.

Yeah, my French heritage comes from my dad's family, who settled all across St. Landry parish. My paternal grandparents both spoke Cajun French, and of those 2, my Granny's first language was French. Her mom, my great grandmother, could barely speak English. They lived just outside of Labeau on Hwy 10.

It only refers to Cajuns. Here is a little history for everyone: Origin of "Coonass"

No way. Baton Rouge isn’t “cajun”. It’s Shreveport with the state university and state Capitol. Same with Zachary, Denham Springs, Hammond, New Orleans. Those aren’t Cajun.

Coonass is Crowley, Abbeville, Lafayette, Breaux Bridge, Mamou, Eunice, Church Point and so on.

My wife (who is not a liberal but is from the north) moved to South Louisiana with a teaching organization. One of her friends got offended when she heard my father and I using the term coonass. Needless to say the b**** was never allowed in my house again

Sostan is spelled Sosthène in French, and it is a man's name.

Because Louisiana ends at I10. North of that isn't Louisiana.
