Was at the store and thought I was having one of those Mandela Effect situations. Turns out I'm not crazy, but I guess the Coppertone girl is the new Aunt Jemima.

quote:

Instead, we evolved her to become a more universal and inclusive symbol for the brand. One without a defined ethnicity and without an overt, sexualized gender. We removed skin tone altogether and made her a tonal illustration that would change depending on the touchpoint. Other changes include rounding the typography, removing the sunshine element, and making the girl's outfit and the dog's action more playful and less suggestive of undressing or aggression.

They could have just updated their logo and left it at that. No one would have thought anything woke about it, but they had to make a statement.

Racism is bad; eh pedophilia is still ok.

I always thought the logo was kind of weird. The new one might actually be better. They didn't need to make that lame arse statement about it though.

Only a sick leftist pedophile frick would look at that logo and think "pedophilia".

You think this is sexually suggestive too?

Amazing how many companies bend over for a small deranged segment of society

Wait… so a topless, pre-pubescent girl, getting her bottoms pulled down by a dog isn’t inappropriate? I guess because it’s a dog, it’s ok???

My comment was more in regards to the new logo still being a young girl, just not outwardly stating her race.

Wtf are you so mad about? You’re hyped up because they took the skin tone off the ad, but calling me out because I don’t think we should use kids in mass marketing???

If I were a generic ethnic, I would definitely find a home in US advertising campaigns

Between this and the “the Pope enriched himself like a Congressman” thread… y’all have lost it. Lots of reaches, to say the least.

I mostly hate how I agree with the change. Too many pervs out there these days.

Making a statement was lame though. Just do it and stfu

In 1953, Coppertone introduced the little girl with the puppy pulling down her bathing suit, with her bottom being lighter than the rest of her body, in order to show how the sunscreen works.

Know that Americans in the "uptight" 1950s, didn't need a fainting couch as much as you. Keep in mind that Elvis didn't appear on the Ed Sullivan show until 1956, three years after this logo was on the shelves in every store in America.

You post some cabbage patch doll; still wearing her top, running away from the dog, terrified, and use that as your means to call me out as being a weirdo?

You had that picture uploaded and dialed in, you commie, leftist, pedophile, frick.

I’m not the one who started a thread pissed off and offended that a company did away with an ad of a half naked 8 year old, making a coy, flirty face about getting her bikini bottoms pulled down.

Do you understand I was around when Garbage Pail Kids were sold to children? This parody card was in every 2nd graders hand in 1984. No one's was offended then either.

Elvis? The man who was 24, when he fell in love with a 14 year old? That’s the basis of your argument? Let me guess, “he was an icon!” Blah blah blah. You can point fingers all you want and call me whatever you want. You were pissed off they made the girl blue instead of white but want to deflect and call me out because I said it was still weird they were marketing with a young girl. 1950’s rah rah whatever.

If people thinks it’s wrong to market products to the masses using young girls in bikinis then they’re commie leftist pedophile fricks according to you. As long as they use dogs in the ads it’s cool, BUT DON’T MAKE THOSE GIRLS BLUE, BY HELL!

That’s what I’m saying dumbass. The garbage pail kid card is hardly the same as the original coppertone ad! That’s a cabbage patch doll that’s fully clothed, no arse cheeks bared, running from a dog.

You’re defending the ad that shows a clearly what, 8-9 year old girl. Who’s topless, has half her arse showing, and is chuckling and biting her finger at her arse being pulled out… and you started the thread, not because the picture was inappropriate, but because they turned the girl blue!

but they had to make a statement.

While Coppertone may have made a statement the text in the OP reads like it is from the ad agency's book not a brand's statement. If you read it the statement sounds like it is right out of the mouth of a copy writers/creatives mouth.
