The USS Yorktown famously sunk during the now-famous Battle of Midway in June 1942. More than 80 years later, an expedition traveled to the wreck site to send submersibles into the reposing aircraft carrier. What they found surprised them.

"That's a car!"

The Ghost Ship Yorktown

Japan thought it sunk her 3 different times... yet she continued to live

1 at Coral Sea ("it'll take 3 weeks to make her seaworthy" "you have 72 hours")

2 times during the air attack at Midway (her damage control crew did such a good job the IJN thought they destroyed 2 different USN carriers which made them continue the attack leading to the sinking of the 4th IJN carrier at Midway)

Then a sub finally got her as she was being towed away from Midway

A car on board isn’t a big deal. It looks like a military staff car, probably to be used by brass onshore.

The video says it might’ve belonged to Jack Fletcher.

Yeah that didn’t really strike me as being some sort of shocking discovery.

The Ghost Ship Yorktown

I did the USS Yorktown Ghost Tour in Charleston & build a model of the USS Yorktown at Midway.

Both ships lost the exact same number of sailors, 141.

I’ll swim out and give y’all an update.

<——-

We just had two ships pass by yesterday that didn’t report that they would be close by.

One of them had both a Japanese flag and what the FWS manager thought was a US flag. He said he could see men lined up looking towards the island and thought they were paying their respects.

When I heard FWS talking about it on our radios, I jokingly said pirates were coming for us.
