A promising cancer treatment that blasts tumors using soundwaves has been approved in the US.

A machine that uses histotripsy, a technique that uses sound waves to break down tumors, has been approved to treat liver tumors by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

It uses targeted sound waves - like an ultrasound machine - to form microbubbles within the tumor.

The forces generated as the bubbles expand and collapse rapidly cause the cancerous mass to break apart, destroying tumor cells and leaving the debris to be eliminated by the immune system.

The approval of the treatment means patients may be able to get treatment for liver cancer without the side effects of radiation or chemotherapy.

That’s sci-fi stuff. Amazing if true (but I have my doubts). Hope I’m wrong.

Almost sounds like introducing a force that would cause free radicals to attack the non-native/biological cells.

Monetizing off of sick people is one thing I truly hate about our society. Shouldn't have to pay not to die. Same as insulin.

Why is this treatment only approved for treating liver cancer?

In a very general sense, it is like lithotripsy used to break up kidney stones which works well in certain applications.

Probably based on the research. Liver tumors are also notoriously hard to treat beyond a certain size.

In an 100% altruistic society I completely agree. In the environment we currently and historically have lived in; this just isn’t reality.

Do I wish Wall Street would accept lower margins in healthcare and pharmaceutical companies? frick yes.

Do I realize that WONT happen? Absolutely.

I’m only speculating but sound waves are mechanical in nature and indiscriminate to a certain extent. The damaged liver around the margins of the tumor(s) can likely recover from the physical damage of the sound waves. The liver is pretty resilient.

This sonic machine will likely kill you if applied to the brain, heart, lung, or other vital organs. It will likely be approved for tumor destruction in other organs as the sonic beam becomes more accurate, if the physics of the sound wave allows.

No one would have invented this technology if not for the profit incentive.

No one in the USSR had to pay “not to die”, but they died in droves because there was hardly any innovation.

This has been in the works for a while and wont be a cure. Just an attempt to slow growth.

Seems feasible…break apart the tumors and free them from the liver so that your white blood cells and body can attack the tumor properly. Could definitely be a cure

Big difference is insulin can easily be made far cheaper and Big Pharma refuses to allow it.

This costs a lot to perform. $12k is a lot but it's well within range of a community fundraiser. The real problem is insurance won't kick in until you already paid most of that amount out of pocket.

I tend to agree to a point. I am sure years of research and development is expensive but you are correct. They don’t just make a living or small profits they make billions off of taking advantage of the sick.

Or you could be a real man and have dignity instead of begging some doctor to put his boombox on your belly

Bring back dying at 40 from cholera or whatever

It kind of sounds like a way to address tumors in places where surgery can be difficult or impossible. What are your thoughts on that, Cosmo?
