The fleur de lis, a French symbol used by royal families dating back to the 13th century, and emblazoned on the New Orleans Saints helmet, is now being called a symbol of slavery, drawing comparisons to the recent uproar against the Confederate battle flag.
[quote]As an African I find it painful, and I think people whose ancestors were enslaved here may feel it even harder than I do as an African,” said slave historian Dr. Ibrahima Seck [quote]Seck said a slave caught running away, “would be taken before a court and the sentence would be being branded on one shoulder and with the fleur de lis, and then they would crop their ears.” Seck isn’t alone. Tulane history professor Terence Fitzmorris said, “It was a brutal way of scarring someone and also identifying someone as a particular troublemaker.” Read more: LINK ]

You could put up a status with two people from every race and religion in the world holding hands in peace and harmony and someone will find something racist about it.

Maybe they'll get rid of all cargo ships into the Port of NOLA? The slave trade used cargo ships so I'm pretty sure seeing those on the MS River has got to be bringing up bad memories.

quote:
The English translation of "fleur-de-lis" (sometimes spelled "fleur-de-lys") is "flower of the lily." This symbol, depicting a stylized lily or lotus flower, has many meanings. Traditionally, it has been used to represent French royalty, and in that sense it is said to signify perfection, light, and life.
This is the meaning.
Just because someone used it to brand slaves, doesn't change the original meaning.
They branded slaves with all sorts of stuff. The horseshoe was a common one. Are the Colts racists?

Damn, if that is the new dealio, New Orleans and STL going to have their hands full.
St.Louis has the Fleur-de-lis in it's flag, and carved into buildings, part of the History of St.Louis.
Guess the statue of King St.Louis will be coming down? Picture of St.Louis is big, but it shows all of those racist Fleur-de-lis on his statue. Even the horse is getting into the racism.

Ok, cool, since New Orleans has 3 Fluer de lis on its flag, the city is much more racist than St.Louis.
