Flight from BTR to DCA in danger of being discontinued

BTR, business leaders have a plan to rally support for underused DC flight
quote:
State and local officials and business leaders are preparing to launch a new initiative to encourage more people to take Baton Rouge Metro Airport’s direct flight to Washington, D.C., which is in danger of being discontinued.
American Airlines began offering roundtrip service between BTR and Reagan National Airport in June, but the airline may pull the nonstop service from its 2024 summer schedule if advance bookings do not increase substantially by the end of the year, BTR officials say.
The Fly BTR to DC campaign will encourage Capital Region business and community leaders to pledge to utilize the nonstop flight from Baton Rouge to Washington, D.C. to ensure the airport maintains the route, while also raising awareness about how losing the flight could impact BTR’s effort to retain and expand future air service, officials say.
The airport offered an incentive package worth up to $2 million comprised equally of state and federal funding to secure the route, with the understanding that American wouldn’t necessarily get all the money but could tap the fund if it falls short of its agreed-upon monthly revenue targets. It typically takes at least six to 12 months for a route to become profitable, Jim Caldwell with BTR told Daily Report in January.
The flight was roughly 45% full in August, according to preliminary figures reported in September, compared to 68% in July and 74% in June. The airport needs the load factor to reach 80% or higher to maintain the flight in the long run, Caldwell said.
Officials plan to announce the new initiative at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the airport.

I just don’t see how there is a sustainable market for this flight with directs from MSY right down the road.

It’s more of a field for bush trips

Only because it makes their life easier.

Would think this flight would get more business with Epstein out of service

It’s more of a jobs program for NBR than anything.

Saw this coming. I said there’s no need for a flight to DC when American (Eagle) already flies to Charlotte. Other than being a non-stop to DC (which is needed by almost no one) there’s nothing flying to Reagan offers you that Charlotte can’t top connection wise.
This flight was pulled off by politicians who were able to grease some palms.

I took this flight a month ago.. It was a 6am takeoff, but the flight attendants had to move everyone around the cabin to evenly distribute the weight.
Had entire row to myself
I also noticed in DC airport that you could look 500 yards in every direction and not see an attractive woman

Tickets are expensive.
Surprised they wanted a DCA flight and not an ORD flight.

Took the flight once in June and it was mostly full.
Surprised it dropped off. Will be taking it more regularly because of a project engagement.

I think it's more for state/government officials to be able to make the trip out of Baton Rouge, since you know, they likely live and work in the La state capitol. We fly exclusively with Southwest out of MSY and gladly make the 1 hour drive + parking fees to avoid having to deal with absurd prices and flight plans from United/American Airlines. We save at least an hour or two and several hundred dollars each flight doing just that.
I've got a friend who recently started working with the FBI in DC and want to be able to see visit, but I can't imagine wanting to fly in those E75 Embraers for 3+ hours. Sadly, there's really no reason to make this trip as often as they planned.

This is the concerning part. Why are we using tax dollars to pay for something that isn't profitable? It either makes money (keep it) or it doesn't (cancel it). Quit propping shite up with my taxes.

I had the same reaction connecting at the Baltimore airport.

DCA isn't a huge hub. Where can you go from there that you can't go from CLT?
This is just O-D traffic to DCA. Surprised they can't make it work more easily, but not surprised that it isn't 100% full all the time.

This. Looked into the flights, and would definitely give it a shot, but it isn't even close to competitive for most dates.

I don't want to overly alarm anyone but this flight is most certainly going away.
And while I'm at it, anytime an airline comes in talking about a new flight to any city that isn't Atlanta, Dallas, Houston or Charlotte - it too isn't going to be around long.
