An aeronautical company in the US has released footage showing a concept version of its flying car performing a vertical take-off before flying over an SUV. Jim Dukhovny, the CEO of Alef Aeronautics, told the BBC's senior technology reporter Chris Vallance, that he had thousands of pre-orders and hoped to start production within 12 months. For around $300,000 (£237,000) the company says buyers will get an electric flying car with a predicted airborne range of 110km (68 miles). But taking a friend for a spin may prove tricky - the cockpit only has enough room for one and a half people. As Vallance points out, Alef Aeronautics are not the only ones trying to make flying cars take off with buyers, and there are huge technological and regulatory hurdles to overcome

Finally Back to the Future is real.

Seems like I've seen these teasers for the past few years. Meanwhile, we're still waiting on autonomous driving to be a full-fledged thing. I'm not holding my breath on this and can't imagine average idiots flying cars unless everything was automated with crash avoidance built-in.

I can’t wait for the flying Altimas.

There is no way this is worth it.

That thing would crush like a coke can in any accident lol. Looks like they put wheels and a shitty plastic frame on a big drone

Ya think?

Nobody wants the same driver who’s looking down at his/her phone doing 60 in a 40 and constantly crossing the lane line flying a car-sized hovercraft over their house.

lol women drivers in the air sounds terrifying

Unless they are 100%, no exceptions, fully automated, “flying cars” would be an absolute disaster.

Maybe that upside down delta pilot will get a chance to fly again after all

Funny Scenarios:
1. drive up to an outdoor pay parking lot for an event. Hover over the pay gate, park, then hover out after the event.
2. approaching a draw bridge on a river, you don't make it in time before the bridge goes up. Just hover over it.

Can you image hundreds or thousands of these flying around.
The sound alone would be unbearable.

That toothache caused him to fly to the dentist in pain, but that upper cavity won’t be easy to repair.

We get something like this every couple of years, then rarely hear anything about it again. Largely, the ones available for sale end up being toys for the extremely wealthy to play with.
If someone can ever make one with that sort of range but price it down around $30k/$40k, it would change the way a lot cities work. Putting aside the astronomical liability issues of some asshat DUI'ing one or texting while flying, a legitimate flying car would essentially increase the travel capacity for a city by at least 2x.
It's fun to imagine, but I don't think we see any option in this field good enough to make a noticeable impact on society unless we can find a way to cheaply manipulate Higgs.
