Good mile time for a kid

My kid who just turned 9 ran a 7:29 mile tonight. He’s never trained at all or been timed. I just had him do it to stay busy and burn off some energy. Is that really good? I feel like it is, but I can’t find anything online. I always thought he could be a distance runner because he never seems to get tired, but now I think I might have a future state champion on my hands.

If it is his first one…not bad.

It’s 4 on a standard track. I measured it out on Google maps, and basically had him run around a park. He actually ran a bit more than a mile because of the way I measured it.

1st link googling “mile run time kid”
I saw that, but the lowest age is for a 10 year old. He’s already pretty good for a 10 year old on that chart.

According to the U.S. National Fitness Standards, the average mile time for 12-year-old boys is 8 minutes and 40 seconds. Running an 8:40-minute mile would place a male child in the 50th percentile. Running anything faster would be an above average time. Those who run 6:22 or faster are in the 100th percentile and are considered elite amongst other 12-year-old boys. Boys who run a 24:54-minute mile or slower are in the last percentile.
Might be looking at the next Mo Farah

Average times based on experience for 10-year-olds range from 7-12 minutes for girls and 6-11 minutes for boys.

You Googlefu sucks because there are a million references for 9-12 YO boys mile times.

I can’t find anything specific to 9YO boys. Most charts start at later ages.

Again, Ive asked before, when did this start and why is this horribly lame reference still around?

It is good, but still too early to know true potential. 7th grade is when you can start to really tell

I remember at that age John Dingle was fast as hell and kicked my arse. By High School he was a has been. What I'm saying is don't put expectations on your kid, let him have fun.

I just want to get some of his energy out.

Natural talent isn’t as important in distance running. Any reasonably healthy kid can pick it up young and do good. Success is far more dependent on training. If he wants to compete in distance running, make sure he has a good coach and start him training at the age you feel appropriate. Year round consistent training is key.
