Hammond's bar scene. Where did all the bars go?

You'd think a college town would have a much better bar scene than Hammond currently does even though SLU is small.
Back in the late 80's to the 90's we had the likes of a few decent bars.
Mickey's
The Library
Razzie's
Star's
Chevy's
Stray Cat's
The Brown Door
Then you had the cougar dens like The Teak Lounge, Johnny's Lounge, The Why Not Lounge or The Crescent
For a good ole slumpbuster night you could go to the likes of The Regency or Scarlet's Lounge.

Sobriety is a beautiful thing. Make some changes.

There was a short-lived after-hours club in Hammond when I was living there in the mid-90s.

Not sure the accuracy of the claim, but there’s been a lot written surrounding Gen Z and not drinking.
Personally I think it’s due to the internet/smartphones. When people talk about the scene for college kids in the 80s/90s there is a feeling of degeneracy. While I’m sure that still occurs, I’d imagine people are more risk averse when there are cameras everywhere recording your every move.
This is a stance with no moral assignment. I’m sure there are both negatives and positives if this has something to do with it.

Jacmel Inn is the place to score if you're young, dumb and full of. . .

I think it’s multifactorial but probably the main thing is no child left behind
Back in the day the dumb jocks would make c’s in high school and have to go to southeastern because lsu wouldn’t take them. Nowadays if you show up to class you get an a pretty much
So all the kids that want to party end up at lsu

There is some truth here. If the stuff I did at Murphys was on cell cam video and social media, the only job I would be able to get would be digging ditches.

It’s unfair how you boomers took full advantage of not growing up in a police surveillance state and then y’all grew up to create a police surveillance state, even going so far as to track yalls kids phones

Brown Door still exists, then you have classy places like Red White and Brew, Gnarly Barley, and Deadbeat Brewing

Younger kids dont drink much anymore. Also Colleges started accepting everyone who applies, so the clientele probably got pretty rough in the mid major college towns.

Cate Street Cantina (long gone)
The Crescent - gets a mix of people these days. It’s the official bar of my son’s frat.

I always thought of it as an "old people" hangout.
It's where my dad would sometimes go after he divorced my mom in the early 80's.
Now my daughter and her friends go there and Benny's....weird.

I'm impressed that Jacmel Inn is still going strong.
I worked up the street. The two bosses and I (associate) ate there periodically. It was good food. I'm not hard to please in regard to meals.

Had this discussion with someone the other day. The internet, dating sites and social media happened. People quit going to bars to hook up. Now a hook up is a click away.
