Will likely need more power plants. Going to be on 600+ acres close to the Audubon bridge.
This is the second major data center announcement in a month for Louisiana.

A $12 billion artificial intelligence data center that will create “several hundred” permanent jobs is coming to West Feliciana Parish, according to Parish President Kenny Havard.
“This is life-changing for the region,” Havard said. “A rising tide lifts all boats.”
West Feliciana officials are set to vote on plans for the Hut 8 AI data center at their Jan. 6 meeting.

According to documents submitted with West Feliciana Parish officials, Hut 8 plans to build the data center on a 611-acre parcel off La. 964 on the southern end of the parish.
The first phase would consist of two 450,000-square-foot buildings that would house data servers and create thousands of direct and indirect construction jobs.

This might be the deal that saves The Bluffs.

In addition to this, there is lot of chatter about another data center in this area very close to New Roads. They take a lot of energy….and that part of the state has a lot of power plants.
The data centers themselves aren’t big employers. The power plants and expansions are where the jobs are.

How many $12b data centers is that for them now?

Or… they chose that spot because of the nuke plant in the area to draw power from.

These data centers and power plans are going to drain our aquifers and we'll be drinking river water soon. But at least we have jobs.

The $10B data center is in North Louisiana and is Meta/facebook.

Who is doing the construction?

Yeah I don’t think they are adding another reactor although that would be cool.
I think they are trying to set up natural gas plants.

Big Cajun directly across the river from the site on the New Roads side is practically running idle due to the current administrations aversion to coal powered plants.

Would make sense as there is an abundance of natural gas in the state.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll be sure to go around that today

Nuclear plants are base load. They are either at 100% or 0%. Gas and coal ramp up and down depending on the market (MISO) prices and are driven by what’s called a Setpoint which basically follows MW demand within the local area unless there is a specific contract.
These AI data centers want contracts directly with power companies. In the short term, gas plants will be built. In the long term, the nuclear industry is looking at putting SMRs (Small Module Reactors) at current Nuclear plant locations where the infrastructure already exists.

this is not far fetched. it was the worst kept secret for a few months. the original owner/developer has reacquired the bluffs, as many know, has legislation from years ago still in place to defer taxes to pay off bonds that will be used to build a hotel and has tons of research and contacts from his initial efforts from 20 years ago. He is not relying on local fees to make the course work. He has known that model won't fly and would not have spent what he has already spent (owner financed however) if he were relying on the public/private course, local fee model. I am hopeful--very cautiously hopeful, but at least it's in play now.
