Negative thinking can lead to decreased cognitive functioning. When you have emotionally charged thoughts, most often negative ones, your limbic system (the reptilian brain – the part that is not as evolved) takes over and your prefrontal cortex which is used for cognitive functioning and organization has energy diverted away from it. As a result, you cannot think as clearly. This is why one of the most effective coping skills when you are feeling emotionally overwhelmed is to engage in a cognitively challenging task like a word or number game or puzzle and this will divert resources back to the prefrontal cortex.

If complaining rewires/ruins your brain, then half of this country is permanently brain damaged.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve become more cynical. Especially about politics. I am trying to get better about it but today’s politicians make it hard.

Is there a way to separate complaining from just venting?

That’s probably close, a little on the low side. Depression is anger turned inwardly, and there are many depressed people in this country.

Yeah I’m not touching this one with the Mrs.

I’d guess a good portion of social media posts and commenting online is complaining and negativity.

Reason #572 the internet and smartphones have made us dumber.

I've seen this posted and I don't think it's ever been proven in any way. This is more of conjecture in a "common sense" way, IIRC.

However, if this is ever proven to be true, it's going to create a huge rift with the "I have to complain for stress relief" meme that's proliferated for women.

There’s a reason why those African kids are always smiling

They have plenty healthy food to eat, their vote counts, no income tax, and what they do makes a difference in the world

Here in America they put you in a cage to send emails and pay taxes and feed you poison and your vote doesn’t count

I’ve definitely become more cynical over the last few years but responsibility and expectations have decreased dramatically over the last 10 years across the board. No one wants to work hard to earn anything anymore and entitlement is at an all time high. Feel as if we are fast on our way to Idiocracy.

Which is awesome.

This entire society is fake. Its just distraction after distraction to keep your mind off the important things in life.

If you see the world as it is, you'll be a cynic.

Not really. Your goal may (allegedly) be different, but the task itself is identical.

I fully believe in practicing gratitude and positive thinking. It makes a difference. Make a short gratitude list every morning, or evening if it helps you to look for things during the day to be grateful for. Do something nice, or compliment one person for day. Tell yourself you love yourself every time you pass a mirror for 30 days.

In a month you'll have a better attitude and those negative thoughts disappear a little quicker.
