re: How much would you need to be paid not to use your vacation days?

Since it’s state employees they probably get PTO for overtime worked. My buddy used to be a civil engineer for the state of Florida and that’s how it worked for him. A coworker got cancer hand he gave the coworker something insane like 300 hours of PTO to use, he had something like 500 hours. This is when he was like 26 just 2-3 years out of college.
But he’d go on work trips across the state and they paid him for damn near every hour he was gone. He really wasn’t working hard he just got insane PTO.

I wish I could sell it back. I really don’t care about traveling. Unfortunately my work does not let us cash in our time (not even at a discount). Or would be cool if can convert unused time into your 401k contribution.

Ours roll over. There have been two guys who have retired here with almost 400 days of vacation after 30 years, which meant they have never taken a vacation day while working here.

our company allows you to sell back PTO for the next year (or buy more) within a limit at a rate equivalent to your salary.
That's interesting. I've never had that at a company and I def would take advantage of this.
My job let's us accrue a max of 300 hours and I have like 290 something. If I leave, it's paid out but I have no plans to do so

I'd take a little less than that.
It's California.
That would be one month's rent.

We are told that we have 2 weeks vacation each year but no one uses it.
The last guy who took vacation days was fired by the owner when returned from his vacation. Owner said that if he thinks he can take a vacation then he didn’t need a paycheck.
I have not had a vacation in 15 years.

State employees are generally paid less than they would get for a comparable job in the private sector, thus, the benefits are better to entice long-term employees.
But allowing them to accumulate and get paid for that much unused vacation is nuts!

Our PTO is use it or lose it. I actually appreciate that because it forces you to take vacation periodically. That helps with preventing burnout.
We get a ton of vacation days per year which increases with tenure. Grateful for that.
I wouldn't sell it back tbh.

My company requires employees to take their vacation or lose it.
That is illegal in some states. But good for them.

Even if you take a week off each year, bank 5 weeks a year for 25 years, is serious money. The one guy with days from 1992, he's not getting his '92 pay for those days, he's getting his 2025 pay rate.
That is the main problem. It should be accrued at the rate you are being paid at the time. If you're making $40k and accrue a week of vacation, it is just shy of $800. Turn around 20 years later and you're making $250k it is just shy of $5k. If that were an option for everyone, it would be real easy to just take 3 of your 4 weeks each year and accumulate. I struggle to take all 4 weeks I get, but most years I end up with 1-3 days leftover.

It would depend on how it affected my retirement and the amount of day to day stress from NOT taking time off.
As it is, I take my time off in increments as I go because I’d rather be happy than a little richer.

I find that a lot of the use it or lose it companies are the same ones who never approve your vacation requests or have an insane amount of blackout days where you can’t put in for vacation. They have no intention of you ever using all of them and they certainly aren’t going to pay you out because they “value work/life balance.” Yeah right.

Worked for a company that allowed you to roll over 15 days, was
bought out. New company was use it or lose it, but we were grandfathered in.
After paying out those days at the higher rates when the old employees started to leave, the CFO realized the liability he had on his books.
Gave us a choice take the payout for the day the last week in December or the first paycheck in January.

I get a quarterly check regardless of time taken off. Around $4k per year.
