NEW ORLEANS — A Mid-City house is on the market, and the owner claims it's eradicated several threats houses usually face through design.

Brian Opert designed and built the three bed, two bath house in 2008. You can feel the difference.

“You knock on the wall you go, 'Oh this hurt my knuckles.' Yeah, it’s solid concrete," Opert said.

The entire home is made out of precast concrete that looks like wood.

“All of these were poured in a factory that we built in the East, and then trucked here and erected with a crane," Opert said.

Since it was built, Opert said he's had to do little maintenance.

“If I were a buyer, I would move in here and paint the inside. Maybe paint the outside because you’re going to get another 20 years, or maybe not. Make the grass pretty. That’s it. There’s nothing else that needs to be done," Opert said.

If that's not a selling point, there are other perks Realtor Kim Kantrow lists.

"...resists hurricanes; doesn’t care about big winds; flooding doesn’t matter; no fire, no rodents, no termites; and bullets will bounce off the concrete exterior walls. With another plus – it’s pretty much sound-proof too!" the listing said.

Opert said Hurricane Ida knocked down trees on the property, but the house wasn't damaged. He said the house is designed to not take on water.

“It’s a reverse swimming pool. Swimming pool keeps the water in, this keeps the water out," Opert said.

There's no wood in the home, so termites won't like it. Even the doors and trim are made out of MDF.

“There’s no wood anywhere. All of this is MDF. There’s no nuts and nut screws. All of this is glued," Opert said.

Plus, you don't have to worry about mold.

“The inside is covered with paperless sheetrock. Paperless because it doesn’t get mold," Opert said.

Opert said the home is peaceful and soundproof.

In January, there was a shootout a half mile away. The NOPD said three people died and they found 70 bullet casings.

Opert said it's possible a bullet could come through the windows, but they would bounce off the home's walls.

“No bullet is going to come through this house," Opert said.

Which is good while you are in the house. Except your car will get jacked and you will get held up once you walk outside.

Living in New Orleans reminds me of the movie The Omega Man except Heston had off street parking.

Interesting fact: the book that this movie was based on was written by a Covington resident.

At least in the movie you were safe during the day as I recall.

If you have this house and a concrete body suit and a concrete car it sounds like you’ll be OK.

Don’t forget the pet- gotta have a concrete suit for Fideaux!

Two blocks off Tulane Avenue, close to Owlie’s favorite street, Gayoso.

Nola can't even keep residents who live in a hurricane, flood, rodent, and bullet proof house because it has gotten so shitty.

Tough scene.

Cool house. Wonder how efficient it is and what they are asking.

Probably all run in conduit. Easier than stick built house with the romex stapled to the studs and joists.

Who cares about the hurricane stuff. The biggest selling point should be that bullets won’t come through the walls and hit you.

I wonder why this hasn't been more of a trend especially due to termites. I do have a question of how insulated it is

MDF molds and disintegrates when wet. Even high humidity is a problem for it. Glue deteriorates with age too, can't imagine how much of a pain in the arse it would be to re-trim that house after a flood.

I love how this is presented like a sales pitch. The house is in a 3rd world neighborhood, but I barely heard any of the murders that night!

Walls are bulletproof, but on the off-chance it comes in through a window, it's going to bounce around and likely hit somebody.

This is like the scene in Dumb & Dumber when Harry is like: "Oh she gave me this bullet-proof vest!"

Lloyd: "Wait, what if he shot you in the head?"

Harry: ::frowns:: "What if he shot me in the head?"

FBI agent: "That was a risk we were willing to take."

I worked 16 years for a company, the owner was a really great guy. He built a "camp" on the ship channel made of "Fold Form". It's used to build basements up north. 1'x3' Styrofoam pieces that fit together like Legos and have a 4", 6", or 12" space between the Styrofoam pieces which is filled with concrete. Rebar is ran vertically and horizontally. It has 3 floors and two elevators, damn thing is like a bomb shelter. We stucco'd the outside and sheetrock on inside. Looked great.

I don't think it would be too much worse since you have to pull the trim anyway when you flood. I agree on the MDF. Being in New Orleans, he should have gone with the mold resistant gypsum stuff for his walls.

You can insulate precast and tilt-up wall panels. Pretty cool process and it was used on the women's prison being built in St. Gabriel.
