Free handouts for people who don't have real jobs

What do you call a "real job"? Sure there are some young military personnel that start off working the desk at the gym or serving food at the chow hall. That's how people gain experience. But, that is only in the Services career field. But everyone starts from the bottom and is given a chance to work to the top. As far as spending their active duty time on vacation; those individuals get discharged or denied reenlistment. With the number of people serving in the military at an all time low, it is nearly impossible to skate on by and not do your job.

Nit sure what's been said because I'm not reading all the responses. I just came off recruiting duty and I out a kid in with Herpes. He had to be outbreak free to go to Meps. We sent all his paperwork up beforehand and the doc cleared him with that stipulation.

You are truly delusional or disgruntled, probably both.

Truth. Call B.S. all you want. My son was told not to mention it, until the recruiter found it was documented on his medical records. The recruiter says if the diagnosis was made at a private clinic, or if the diagnosis was made just visually, without a blood test, my son might have had a chance.

This is in line with the sources I've consulted; as long as the herpes is amenable to treatment, it isn't a disqualification.
Can't understand why two different recruiters are telling my son this, unless this is a new policy.

I never dealt with a recruiter per se since I went in as an officer through ROTC, but even if I had that was over 25 years ago.

If it were my son I would just have him call every recruiter in driving distance and be totally upfront, "Sgt So and So told me herpes is a straight disqualification. Is this correct?" In an afternoon he will find out if it is true or not.

I am neither, but I live in a military town and have enough friends posting pics and videos of them skimboarding in Hawaii to know what it's all about.

Very few people in the military deserve the hero worship they receive. There are people, such as firefighters and police officers, who put their lives on the line daily - while some 19 year old in the Navy is getting worshipped for spending his time mopping floors, shining dishes, and jogging.

I wouldn't call Fort Polk and Fort Bragg tropical paradises.

Like I said, sorry you're a weak manlet that couldn't cut it. I know, it's not for everyone.

Good news if true. Thanks. We are getting a lot of conflicting info. His army recruiter says he has a permanent disqualification on his file. Were gonna kept trying. Sounds like we just have to find the right recruiter.

And I'm sorry I hurt your precious snowflake feelings by suggesting actually serving your community in tangible ways would be better than joining the military.

Military members aren't allowed to go on vacation or enjoy their time off work?

Hero worship? WTf? I've been in for 16 years, deployed to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia twice and Afganistan three times. The closet thing to hero treatment is the 10% discount I get from Lowes. So like I said, you're delusional and disgruntled.

Oh, of course they are. And they should be treated just as anyone else with any other normal occupation. Our society chooses to worship them. I don't know why.

Anyone who's melting is you. You're all jealous and shite because guys in the service go on vacation like millions of other Americans do while ignoring the thousands of combat veterans who come back with all kinds of issues and a VA system that fails them every day. I'm sure they enjoyed their "vacations" they were told to go to in various parts of the world.

Edit: I'm sure my father and uncle, both 100% disabled combat veterans enjoyed their "vacation" in Saudi for Desert Storm.

You're a part of the minority that deserves

And pretty much every retail store, restaurant, service provider, financial/loan institutions will give you a discount if you asked. You should ask. You've earned it.
