Is there a glut of urgent care centers? Seems they are in nearly every shopping center

At least in my area

One closed after being open only 4 months. I never saw a single patient in there when I would drive by.

Another opened recently and it’s the same story….always empty.

A quick google search says I am not alone in people noticing a sharp increase in urgent cares.

You’re not imagining it! The number of urgent care centers in the U.S. has doubled from roughly 7,000 to over 14,000 in recent years. This massive boom is driven by a few key trends:Unmatched Convenience: Traditional primary care doctors often require booking weeks in advance, while emergency rooms mean long, expensive waits for non-life-threatening issues. Urgent cares offer walk-in access and extended hours with average wait times under an hour.Primary Care Shortage: Nearly one-third of Americans don't have a primary care doctor. Urgent cares fill the gap for sudden ailments like sore throats, sprains, or minor cuts.Corporate & Investor Backing: Private equity and major health systems have poured billions of dollars into urgent care chains. Because they are cheaper than ER visits and highly profitable, they’ve spread across suburban strip malls and urban corners.

I injure myself constantly and refuse to go. Ibuprofen and ivermectin is all I need.

Makes sense. Sometimes it can take a week or better to get into my GP. But sometimes it’s something that doesn’t need a full on, sit in the ER for 8 hours visit.

Yeah and they are pretty worthless if you have an actual medical need. I had a minor car accident a few months back and was feeling a little bit tight in my chest the next day so I went to one thinking they could help. Nope, they called an ambulance to take me to ER. They wouldn’t let me drive myself because I looked “pale.”

Not trying to laugh at your expense, but I chuckled a bit internally imagining you insisting you are fine as they hoist you into an ambulance.

That happened to my dad once at the dentist. He went in for a root canal, they took his heart rate and discovered he was in AFib, and staff called an ambulance. He refused to leave insisting he wanted his root canal done. He finally gave in

Anything involving chest tightness or your heart is going to catch you a ride to the hospital

It beats the hell out of going to the emergency room. It’s especially convenient with primary care doctors not having appointments available.

It’s the primary care doctor for permanent visitors.

Most of them are H1B filled. The 7/11s of the medical industry. They get brought here to push natives out of medical schools, and probably get immigrant only sba money.

Keep paying your taxes Americans

The problem as I see it in my area is 'urgent' care centers are open for the most part the same hours as a doctor's office. Most are open from 9 in the morning to 6 in the evening. In the mid 80s when the first generation urgent cares opened they tended to be from 6 in the evening to 6 in the morning. In the past couple of years, hospital systems began to build small stand alone independent ER facilities. This will likely result in even more urgent care centers biting the dust.

Doc in a box. Private equity.

But it does beat a $1,500 ER bill for $120 worth of stitches.

And went to an urgent care?

That makes my chest tight thinking about that choice.

I disagree. In the last year I’ve had flu diagnosis and tamiflu prescriptions, temporary cast on a young child’s arm, quick it’s nothing major here’s your return to school script, and dug out an ingrown hair that flared up on a Friday night.

Ochsner gets shite on a lot, but with them you can find available wait times and schedule an appointment at their urgent cares so you’re not sitting in a waiting room for several hours

HB1s are hard workers who are the only ones willing to the job at the rates those places pay. They have my respect and appreciation.

It’s private equity driving much of the growth.

I go for bloodwork and trt. Cheap, easy...no fuss

Not under the legal bs like a hospital owned doc.

I'll go main stream for a specialist only

Usually maned by nurse practitioners so it’s cheaper to run them than an office building

They do seem to pop up. I went to one one time, it was a weekend night (Friday or Saturday). I was running a fever and my concern was if there was an infection of some type. I sure as hell wasn't going to the ER for that, but the doctor who saw me was a hippie. That didn't impact how he did his job or anything, but he gave off the "I need to pick up these shifts here because I have a money situation I am dealing with" vibe
