It seems like they all start off white and pristine, but as time goes on they turn, brown/gray/black as they become covered in dirt and grime. They get kind of ugly after a while.

Is there any way to clean them or do they all just get all nasty over time?

Are we talking about concrete railings? Even if not, you can almost surely just power wash most of that grime off. Won’t be white again but would make a difference.

It just looks ugly when they turn brown from all the grime

Pressure wash them and/or elastomeric paint

For clarification, doesn’t power washing wear down concrete?

Superficial I would say. As long as the rebar isn’t exposed, you’re ok. That’s when you start getting worried.

Of all the things that need resources dedicated in this poor state, I'd say pressure washing highway concrete so it isn't "ugly" should be low on the list.

What a complete waste of taxpayer money.

Therefore…

I expect the state to start cleaning them soon.

Are you willing to accept the additional traffic that would result from shutting down parts of the interstate. Are you willing to accept the cost of performing the project?

You’re not wrong. I thought more about the sound barrier walls on I-12 by the I-10 fly over. Those could use a good power washing.

Couldn’t someone built a mobile power washer with angled jets so they can shoot multiple jets along the wall in a tanker to clean the wall in a single pass?

It would be like a modified tunnel cleaner, something like this but just one set of brushes.

You have to have the highest thread to post count ratio ever for someone who regularly posts.

And boy are they bad.

I can see that happening. Get a crew of 10 people, 3 trucks, 50 cones out on portions of the interstate, block off a lane of traffic-----during peak traffic hours of course and have one person with a pressure washer hose/nozzle doing the work while the other 9 make sure it's done right.

I would rather not steal and waste tax payer money on cleaning something that is going to get filthy again in less than a year.

Just in Louisiana they refuse to clean anything. Look how shitty the state capitol looks!
