It appears showing your passport to reenter the U.S. is no longer needed.

I haven't traveled internationally recently, but...

Now, I should say I have never signed up for TSA pre-check, Fast Track, or any other kind of Global Travel authentication. I have always opted to just be a grey traveler with as little a footprint as possible. I reentered the U.S. the same way in February and needed to show the traditional passport, etc. However, this time in April it was totally different. There is no longer any paperwork or documentation needed. It actually, seemed a little weird.
I should also note the U.S. “opt-out” for facial scans is a little bit of a ruse; the reason is when you depart from a foreign country, destined to the USA, the facial recognition is mandatory. The U.S. Dept of Homeland Security, TSA and Border Control, require all countries to authenticate the U.S. destined traveler at the point of exit. It’s not optional in other countries, you either comply or you don’t get to come home to the USA.
Because it’s not optional in other countries, and because the database is connected to the U.S. border entry system, the fact you can opt-out of having your picture taken inside the USA is moot; your facial impression is already captured at your point of departure from the foreign country and shared with U.S. homeland security.
This appears to be how the interconnected systems are now recording travel. By the time you reach the U.S. entry point, they already have a database of your biometrics to match your entry. Cameras located facing toward the traveler as they approach the kiosk, cross reference the data and the passport control officer knows exactly what authorities for entry you carry as you approach. Showing documentation such as your passport is no longer needed.

I was pretty baffled by this as well. I have global entry and I didn’t even have to stop at a desk to check in. They knew who I was as I walked through and just waved me on through.

The quicker lines will be welcoming. LAX and ATL are a nightmare.

I traveled internationally last month and it was needed. Everything was how it has been for a few years now. They did have the facial scans, but they still checked passports at the gates and customs.

Been like this at DFW a few years I think. I have no TSA pre check, just a passport with stamps. I haven’t been asked for it at re-entry since they installed the recognition systems. Takes a pic and guy goes “you’re good”
Miami a different story. Passport presented every time and I have repatriated there several times in the last 2 years.

I don't think that's the way it works.

I've had this happen in both the US and England. Both times it caught me a little off guard, but then I just shrugged, accepted I live in 1984, and went on about my day.

Global entry has been this way for a few years now.

I went though LAX customs last June. I had to show my passport.

Maybe it's just more universal now.

If you are flying out of Dublin or Shannon, they do everything before the plane takes off. When you land you are treated as a domestic flight.

I have Global Entry but the new setup with the app is pretty sweet. Just walked right through.

I think his point is, don't waste your time trying to avoid the system.

I was just joshing with you but I can't remember the last time I had to show mine, for security reasons they do like to break up the pattern instead of every single POE being identical in procedure

My point is he was wasting his time the whole time, not just when he realized these changes.

I nearly missed a flight in Dublin because of this. Last minute flight that had to connect through Dublin. Didn't know I'd be sprinting through customs to get to my plane.

This immediately makes me think this person doesn't actually fly that much.
TSA PreCheck is only for flights within the US (and also the outbound only portion of your leg when leaving the US). There is no TSA PreCheck when coming back from overseas. If you don't have PreCheck or Clear you are going to still have to wait in the longer TSA check line at US airports.
Global Entry is different. It is for international travel. It includes PreCheck, but it is to not have to wait in the Customs line when returning to the US.
He also talks about "opt out" of the facial recognition. He said he has PreCheck. The photo they take is literally to put you into the facial recognition database.
He also didn't mention the RFID in your passport that has your photo and info in it. It's been in passports since 2007.
Is this person saying that they didn't have to go through customs at all?
