Jeans with a sport coat, right? That can be pulled off, for a conference setting, yes or no?

Depends on the industry, but a safe answer is no.

when the OT was mostly college kids or recent college grads, I would expect these questions
but now we are all middle aged dudes well into our careers
I would think we would all know how to dress by now

Usually no.
Business casual historically has been slacks with a collared shirt in my experience.

It really depends on the business in my opinion. Some industries are more casual than others. In my industry 20 years ago jeans were not considered business casual and now it is acceptable. I've even seen our CEO in jeans a time or two. But most upper management still wears slacks mostly.

I hope so because I'm wearing jeans to jury duty. My county only pays $10 a day so they can deal with blue jeans as far as I'm concerned.

No. Jeans are casual, coat or not.
You probably won’t get called out on it as an attire infraction but it’s one of those “give them an inch, they take a mile” example. Stick to casual slacks.

Depends on the industry...and if you are a speaker at the conference.
At the annual conference I go to for my industry, I used to always wear slacks when most everyone else wore blue jeans...then over time switched to black or gray jeans...and now I just wear blue jeans.

You'd be considered black tie based on some of the stuff I saw the last time I was in traffic court. The stuff some people think is appropriate to wear in public is ... interesting

maybe if its a dark blue or black denim and you're in your 20's.

Depends on location too. Denver/dallas/houston - yes
Atlanta/orlando/vegas - no

Only at a prosperity gospel preachers conference

It depends on what your jeans are. Generally, the darker and more conservatively cut (no rips, no obvious distressing, etc.) are nicer than the khaki bullshite the middle aged frat boys wear with navy blazers.
Dress them up with fancier shoes/cowboy boots than you would normally wear with jeans. It's a conference, you're not presenting to an undersecretary for the Secretary of Defense. There will be plenty of assholes with "slacks" on that don't have collar stays in their shirts, or still rely on the plastic BS that comes stock with most shirts, or who have barely ironed their shirts, or are rocking athletic shoes in their sports coats, etc.

I’d say no. Always better to be over dressed than under.

In Texas, sure why not. My boss went off on me once bc I dressed that way, but she was from Colorado and didn’t understand that’s how we do business casual here.

I'll buck the trend here and say as long as they're dark, good quality jeans and you wear a good shoe with them, you can get away with business casual by putting on a sports coat. Some industries you might have to step it up to slacks
