Let’s just say I have an interview for a promotion. The interviewer asks why I think I should get the job. I know and the interviewer knows that the other candidate has been suspended, has lied about incidents that has gotten others suspended until the truth came out. Has also been a person that nobody likes to work for. Is this ok to bring up in an answer that I have never been suspended, never lied and have a good relationship with all of my coworkers. He would know what I’m talking about without mentioning the other persons name. Is this ok to do? I also have 15 years at another job of leadership experienced roles.

Should Trump base his candidacy on he is not Biden or should he tout his accomplishments when president.

Focus just on positive answers. Never a good look when you try to bad mouth your competition even if you aren’t directly saying it.

I would avoid the, "I'm the right person for the job because I'm not that other guy" response.

By saying that, you've said nothing about yourself. Everyone except "that guy" isn't that guy. Should your other co-workers be promoted too, because they aren't him?

Brag yourself up, don't tear someone else down. Sounds like he's doing a fine job of doing that to himself.

You’re good enough, you’re smart enough, and doggon it, people like you.

You don't speak of the other candidate at all, only your reasons to be given the job.

It would require such a delicate touch to pull off right.

And this is why.

You are essentially confessing that you don't have any thing of particular value that you feel you can bring to the table.

If I had a shitty candidate, and someone who pulled the stunt you are thinking off, I'd 86 both and consider external candidates.

Asking why you are the guy for the job isn't a trick question. You should have asked yourself that question before you applied. If you aren't prepared to answer it without shitting on anyone, you don't deserve it. Period. You sound like someone who feels they are entitled to positions just because they have been around for a while.

And if you don't get it, you prob will invent scenarios about how the evil boss did you wrong and post about it on r/antiwork.

And the other person is a serious candidate?

Don’t promote yourself by putting down others.

Even asking this question shows you aren’t the right person for the job.

If you have to bring up someone else’s issues to make you look good, you don’t look good. Highlight the positives you have done for the company and why you think you would be a good leader and example for the company.

Nobody knows how to interview anymore. Provide specific examples to the questions asked and give details about the situation, you impact, and the results. At the end, tie it all together as to why these examples make you the candidate for the job.

Promote me because I've never been suspended, I don't lie, or throw co-workers under the bus to save my own arse.

vs

Promote me because I have mastered all the tasks assigned to me and would really like the opportunity to take on more.

Both of these examples are drastically different.

One represents a low expectation having mthfker who thinks that as long as they are not a POS, they should be given raises and promotions. Forget about what value they add or skillset they bring, to them its all about tenure, loyalty, and honesty. Those attributes are necessary to keep a job, not to be given raises or promotions.

The second represents a person who confidently states they understand all the intricacies of the company and operations of which they are responsible for, is executing at a high level, and has the want and capacity to take on more. Those are value added qualities that create an asset worth a companies investement.

You could always slip in that you are a “man of integrity” while summarizing your qualifications and leave it at that.

No. You should focus on your accomplishments and qualifications for the job to sell yourself. As you said, they are already aware of the other candidate’s history. You would look unprofessional and like you have no real arguments for your own promotion.

Highlight or focus on what you can bring to the table and not what someone else did in the past.

Ask what they want in a candidate.

Taylor your sales presentation of yourself to what they want.

I would be looking for a job at another company if that was my competition for a promotion.

Is that the other candidates downfalls your biggest asset? I think you'd be better off promoting yourself in a vacuum.

This is your opportunity to make it about yourself, use it.

It sounds like at this point your competition isn’t the other guy. You are up against yourself, and the possibility of an outside or surprise candidate.

I wouldn’t base my approach as “better than the worst applicant”

If you want to mention as a strength that you lead by example and have had several success and no negative incidents that could be a more positive framing of why you are the best candidate instead of not the worst candidate

Sounds like a horrible plan. You are better than someone that should be terminated? Cool
