How the Red Cross Raised Half a Billion Dollars for Haiti and Built Six Homes
quote:
In late 2011, the Red Cross launched a multimillion-dollar project to transform the desperately poor area, which was hit hard by the earthquake that struck Haiti the year before. The main focus of the project — called LAMIKA, an acronym in Creole for “A Better Life in My Neighborhood” — was building hundreds of permanent homes.

Today, not one home has been built in Campeche. Many residents live in shacks made of rusty sheet metal, without access to drinkable water, electricity or basic sanitation. When it rains, their homes flood and residents bail out mud and water.

I know the red cross doesn't have the best reputation, but using something that happened in Haiti to say they aren't any good just seems odd to me.
No one can do shite in Haiti, that's why they're Haiti.

I would not donate to any agency that uses less than 80% of their funds to direct support disaster victims.

Don't they take a cut then pass along to other charities who take a cut then pass along to final place?

YES. Brilliant business plan. "Give us your money. We will figure out who needs it. Oh, did we mention we need a taste as we pass it along?" Basically the liberals dream government scenario. We know better than you. Give us everything and we will distribute. FWIW, they have their hooks into the federal government big time. They used to come around our office and try to force us to contribute. Supervisors got marks on their annual review based on what percentage of their subordinates contributed.

I always enjoy the United Way donation shakedowns at work each year.

Fair, as long you still donate.
The Red Cross gets many donations that wouldn't be donated otherwise. Even if only 20% is spend for direct support, it is better than 80% of nothing.
The Red Cross has issues, no argument there, but their massive size can still provide quite a bit of help.

As a flood victim of 2016 I can tell you the Red Cross is not bad, but there are more effective ways to donate money to help. The Red Cross basically brought me a bucket of supplies that I already had received from friends and family. They also gave me two shovels. The one meal they brought was just weird. It was like mystery meat and some green glop of veggies. Red Cross only stayed about a week or two, they were gone pretty quick.
On the other hand, countless, nameless local churches brought in great food and needed supplies. The church brought so much that I had to turn some away because I had too many supplies. For at least a month or two after, easily through mid September, when I was working on my house during the weekend, some church would show up and feed us all in the neighborhood. One Saturday in mid-Septermeber I was in my attic fixing some problem and it was down right hot. I came down out of the attic dripping wet after installing electrical for additional security lights around my house. This one lady saw me and asked why. I told here about the theft problems in our neighborhood. Her church donated $50 gift card from Lowes to buy security lights. Local churches are where it is at for really helping disaster victims.

What an absolutely ridiculous position this is.

Were the homes built elsewhere? Haiti is bigger than just one city.
I am just wondering if this is true for all of Haiti or if someone is picking and choosing their info.

Give to a organization that uses volunteers and not paid staff.
Or give to a church housing and feeding folks. You can go thwre everyday to verify the money is not being wasted
