A disabled woman's rotting body, which had melted into the padding of a couch, was discovered at her parents’ house in Louisiana, with the coroner calling it the “worst form of medical neglect.”

A grand jury will meet on May 2 to determine whether the parents of the victim, Lacey Fletcher, 36, will be held responsible for her death, said Sam D’Aquilla, the district attorney for the 20th Judicial District.

Lacey’s body, weighing only 96 pounds at the time, was found on Jan. 3 at her parents’ home on Tom Drive in Slaughter.

Officers “deemed it was obviously a deceased individual so they called me, and I was out there within 10 minutes,” Dr. Ewell Dewitt Bickham III, the East Feliciana Parish Coroner, told WAFB.

Bickham revealed that he found Lacey’s remains on top of a 1960's style sofa that was covered with urine and feces.

“When I first walked in the house, it smelled of feces, fecal material, however you want to put that politely, it stunk. And when I got to the body, the individual was basically sitting in a hole, filled with liquid stool and urine,” Bickham told the outlet.

Lacey’s body, from top to bottom, was covered in feces and had insects all over, sources told WBRZ. The couch was a “latrine,” and it is unclear when Lacey was last mobile. However, sources that spoke to the outlet estimate that she sat in the same place on the couch for years.

The coroner said an autopsy ruled Lacey’s death a homicide. He believes she suffered “at least a decade of medical neglect.”

Story for those trying to figure out what OP is talking about:
quote:

The scene that East Feliciana Parish deputies found on Jan. 3 at the home of a town alderman in Slaughter spelled untold misery.

Lacey Ellen Fletcher, a 36-year-old shut-in, was dead, her body sunken into a crater in the living-room couch, where she'd anchored herself. When she last left the spot was uncertain, said District Attorney Sam D'Aquilla this week. It might have been years ago.

“The caretakers just let her sit on the couch. She just urinated and used the bathroom on the couch,” D’Aquilla said. “It was so horrific.”

D'Aquilla said in an interview that he will ask a grand jury next week to bring second-degree murder charges against Fletcher's parents, Sheila and Clay Fletcher. He said Fletcher suffered prolonged neglect, possibly for years, before her death in the house near Hog Bayou.

Things don’t totally add up here. Why wouldn’t she leave the couch early on? Was she injured/sick and couldn’t? Really strange.

She wouldn't leave the couch because she was autistic. The a-hole parents just gave up on her and let her die and rot in their house. It's insane.

She had severe asburgers (sp?) and had gotten to the point where she couldn't communicate.

I certainly agree with this. There's also some blame to be laid on the people that control health care in this country. The govt decided long ago they weren't going to fund mental health facilities or mental health care. How many stories do we have to hear about school shooters that were already struggling mentally, stories of people unable to care for themselves and family being unable to control them? This is pathetic.
