This may seem like a dumb question, but is it so the flame burns off the methane or whatever in the flatulence, or is it because the burning chemicals in the match head overpower the flatulence?

If the methane has built up enough you’ll explode, and thus not have to face the embarrassment of people thinking your poop stinks

That's a fact.

When I was growing up we always had matches in the bathroom.

You don’t really see matches anywhere anymore, tbh

Match smell isn't burnt wood smell, it's mostly sulphur smell.

It's like a good red wine with a quality steak. Match smoke and stank arse just pair well together.

My dad used to smoke his Pallmall no filter cigs while taking a good healthy one and he never blew up.
He did fall asleep on the toilet sometimes and fall off.

It is a combination of both and, if you allow the flame to burn all the wood before extinguishing it, you get more burnt wood smell.
