Is there kind of a consolidated forum or thread on LSU info, more specifically things to do with on/off campus housing? Apartments to stay away from. Dorms to stay away from? Streets off campus that are better than some? safer? Are there dorms that are assigned depending on majors?

Also, LSU lists expenses on their website. Tuition, Housing & food, Books & Supplies, and "other". "Other" is listed as $8,642. WTF is my child gonna have to pay for outside of the previously mentioned items?

Do people usually find LSU provided housing cheaper than off campus (but nearby) housing? Do landlords usually require year leases or by the semester?

Would anyone like to provide insight, or at least a link to these types of discussions, pretty please?

I can find general info on the LSU site but they are not going to tell me where to stay away from, etc...

There is no specific spot to get all of that info. Other is simply expenses during the course of a college. Eating out, drinking at the bar, toiletries, etc. Everything not covered under room and board, which is just a room and a meal plan.

LSU provided housing is not cheaper than off-campus. Daughter is living off Ben Hur for $650/month in a 3 br with 2 roommates. Son is living on campus for a total of $10k for the year, which is really only 9 months. That works out to $1,100 per month. So almost double.

Around campus is good on south and east until you get to gardere area. Stay away from north side except for downtown area/spanish town or between I-10 and government/ Florida east of Park Blvd.

Doesn’t matter. First year students are required to live on campus unless they live with a parent, or in a property owned by a relative, within in a 50 radius of campus.

Freshmen have to live on campus. And to be honest, it is good for them.

The quality of dorms overall is dramatically better than 10 years ago. The real shitty ones are gone, other than Pentagon and a couple others. What is your kid majoring in? They have residential colleges where basically everyone in the dorm is in the same college (business, engineering, etc).

If your kid is a girl and wants to rush, all the sororitutes stay in Miller. (Which is a dump and will be torn down in a couple years.)

Generally the brand new ones are like palaces -- Cypress, Spruce, and those two new ones by Miller/Herget.

That would be the Science Residential College, housed in recently-renovated Evangeline and Highland Hall. I love the dorms in the horseshoe. All but one have been fully renovated. My daughter lived in Annie Boyd her first year and loved it.

This and FWIW, my son and 3 of his buddies lived together their first year in North Hall, but all those dorms in that area are pretty nice

Right next to the PMac, beach volleyball and indoor swimming, everything else is very walkable.

Highland and Chimes is not far away at all

They’ve all moved now to the Southside off Ben Hurr

I think overall expenses are cheaper off campus. Just have to be careful bc those airs are crap, too. My daughter stayed in Kirby Smith bc Miller filled up quickly and then in an apt next 3 years. You can learn a lot on the LSU Parents FB page, and can also ask for suggestions when your child is eligible to move off campus. I think adm checks enrollment status bf you are accepted, and there’s plenty of Karens and helicopter moms who can’t allow their adult children to make decisions. But you will want to join if your child attends.

why would your children not stay at home and commute given you still live in Baton Rouge?

So they can be more independent and you don’t have to stay up worrying when they’ll be home from whatever.

Don’t be a helicopter parent.

And they don’t move home in the summer.

I'm guessing it's for the same reason my child is looking for housing close to campus. We live only about 18 miles away and her boyfriend made the trip recently... took two hours and barely made it to class on time.

Does she want to do that every day? Nope. Can't even come home during the day. She'd have to stay all day between classes.

the meal plan is the biggest rip off for those that live on campus
they get tired of the campus food and most start going off campus at times so you end up paying for meals the students don't end up using
I will say the dorms are much improved from the old days and having that convenience instead of having to drive and park is nice that first year
