San Francisco Chronicle: "Major Avalanche Closes Palisades Tahoe: 'This is a really big deal'"
The avalanche occurred in the gully area of KT-22, the resort said. It was the first day that the famed chairlift opened for the season after a slow start to winter. Skiers and snowboarders had queued up at the chairlift early in the morning. A representative with the resort had said Tuesday in an Instagram post that KT “might not be groomed, so be sure to ski and ride at your own risk.”
KT-22 sends skiers to the top of a peak whose 2,000 vertical feet of slopes draw professional skiers from around the world. With its wide-open bowls, steep chutes and cliffs, it has been called the “greatest expert lift in North America” by Powder magazine.
“Apparently, the first group started skiing down the bowl and literally the entire top of the bowl broke loose and slid down the hill,” Sponsler said. “One person who literally saw it happen told me they saw at least five people disappear under the snow, and only one came up. They saw skis and poles sticking up out of the snow.”
“This isn’t a little slide, this is a really big deal,” Sponsler said.
He saw “wave after wave” of searchers hauling up the slopes to help probe the slide area for victims.
Fresno NewsOne person is dead and another injured in the aftermath.

I lived in Tahoe City and had a pass at Squaw. I’ve taken that lift (and the ninny way down) numerous times. Sucks for the whole community up there

Damn - just watched "Buried" on Netflix. A documentary about the Alpine Meadows avalanche in 1982. Squaw Valley is not that far from Alpine Meadows.
Hope they're able to find everyone in time, if they're trapped.

what's the difference between an avalanche and a major avalanche?

I'm amazed this doesn't happen more often

I think it's similar to a large boulder the size of a small boulder

A major avalanche is when the entire cornice on KT2 comes down at lightning speed.
This would be the equivalent of a Glacier Avalanche.
I've skied this area where the avalanche hit and it slopes down into a congested area below the Strawberry Fields. Its very steep and a large area. 30 minutes after the lifts open though means it shouldn't be too crowded hopefully.

What's the difference between drizzling rain and a hurricane band of rain?
Hope this helps.

A major avalanche will likely result in numerous deaths. Ski patrol has their hands full trying to find buried riders before they run out of breath. It’s probably already too late and anyone buried won’t make it out

If they did it wasn’t successful.

I like how articles won't spell out "Squaw", likes it's the N word.

Was this at Squaw Valley resort or Alpine Meadows?

Pretty much the same resort. There is a gondola you can take from base to the other.

Squaw. KT 22 lift is right at the main base of Squaw.
