BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Matthew Naquin, the former LSU student found guilty of negligent homicide in the 2017 hazing death of fraternity pledge Max Gruver, was sentenced to five years in prison on Nov. 20.

A six-person jury found Naquin guilty on July 17. Naquin was originally supposed to take on Oct. 15, however, a judge delayed the sentencing because one of Naquin’s relatives was hospitalized with a serious illness.

Gruver, 18, of Roswell, Georgia, died from alcohol poisoning in September of 2017 after a hazing ritual called “Bible Study,” in which Phi Delta Theta pledges were required to chug hard liquor if they wrongly answered questions about the fraternity.

Judge Beau Higginbotham sentenced Naquin to the five year maximum, with three years probation and 1,000 hours of community service work. As part of his sentence, Naquin must also write a letter of apology to the Gruver’s parents and present a one-hour hazing talk to high schools a handful of times.

This guy got fricked because they wanted to make an example out of him.

He’s definitely going to win that appeal. You can’t give the max penalty to a first time offender and expect that to stick

I don’t know man, forcing someone to drink themselves to death for “brotherhood” seems a little more fricked.

I understand he’s wrong 100% and deserves to be punished...
but they can force him to write an apology letter to Gruver’s parents? Whut?

Gruber is dead.
Naquin gets 5 years in jail.
Both of their actions were really really dumb.

I had to take some liberties in summarizing it to fit the thread title character limit.

I feel bad for the kid but at the same time, you don't get kids like Max Gruver to chug everclear. He was clearly an amateur

So, with good behavior, spending a total of a year in jail after inadvertently killing someone is "getting fricked"?

there seems to have been plenty of blame to go around. Reason being this guy got a similar sentence to someone that gets busted with a couple Xanax in their pocket.
