Fixed it for you.

I worry about this with my mom. She always feels the need to answer calls and listen to what people have to say instead of hanging up or just not answering.

So basically you’re saying your dad is as dumb as you. Got it. No need for a long contrived story. Just say it.

I guess you'll never tell us what happened?

Maybe you’re right

It’s tough for me to comprehend because I came from old money and have never known anything other than material comfort

Unless you live in Florida, I would think this is a federal crime. Should contact FBI. Probably won’t get any money back, but it might help serve justice.

The FBI isn’t getting involved over $500. My company had 37K stolen in a wire fraud and I contacted the local FBI office. They gave me a link to go fill out a report. I did and never heard from them again.

Why are people so bad at making threads? Leaves all kinds of info out and never comes back to clear it up. Half the threads are like this.

He must've given them some info, these hackers aren't able to access shite just by some guy answering his phone.

ETA: My fault for only reading the OP and not the three pages after. Turns out, the dad did respond.

We need to get AI involved in leading these trash bags down a long, monotonous conversation leading to nothing but hours of wasted time.

I pray that you will live long enough to get old enough to understand how the scams work.

Why? I already know and have known for a looooong time how they work. But thanks for your prayers.

This must be a bot. No one would share a pretty personal story like this and have no investment in participating in the ensuing conversation.

I never ever answer numbers I don’t recognize. Boomers would do well to follow suit. If it’s important they’ll leave a message.

Doesn't sound like hacking. Sounds like he probably gave them the walmart.com password.

Also possible he allowed them onto his computer with some form of remote access program. I hope the OP checks installed programs and sorts by date installed to see if they installed remote access software.

Step-dad did that about a month ago although it appears a trojan inserted the software.

Make sure your dad has a GOOD antivirus. No. Windows Defender is not good. It is garbage. Run malware bytes free version first, then a good antivurus. I was using Kaspersky before the Ukraine war. Once that started Kaspersky was no longer able to sell to the US. I switched to Bitdefender. Pro tip, always buy your antivirus from Amazon. Do not allow recurring charges. Most of the AV companies increase the cost anywhere from 50 to 100% on renewal. You can buy the new version each year from Amazon. TLDR.

Make sure he wasn't actually hacked with some scans. Talk to him at least once a month about phishing. I have to do it with my step dad and sister almost monthly.

It is terrifying how easily people can be fooled. Alleged intelligent folks with advanced degrees are just as susceptible. Happens all of the time at work.
