i believe it.
but i think everyone has their own reasoning, Im not sure there’s one clear reason.
i grew up watching the NBA almost every night it was on cable. I still start tuning in once we get near playoff time. But for me what’s lost me is similar to Shaq’s sentiments a few weeks back.
The game now just seems to be focused on setting perimeter screens to get up as many 3’s up as possible. Every single team, that’s their offense. And Defense doesn’t really exist anymore. It makes a very uniform and boring game.
this too. I’m good on watching the handful of teams that I’m allowed to watch for the nationally televised games. GSW, LAL, DAL, MIA, OKC, BOS, DEN, MIL, NYK, etc. rinse. repeat. 90% of the games on are those teams and my local team is blacked out.

NBA and MLB have made it way too hard to watch your home team consistently. The dying regional sports network model and blackouts in the age of streaming have made things a giant pain.

Why do you think the NBA audience has disappeared?
Because of woke, obviously.

Jokes aside, and I think someone mentioned it, but it’s because of the god awful local tv deals teams have made. I have only seen one Pelicans game this year because there isn’t a way to watch it on DirecTV yet (probably a blessing in disguise).

Most of the best players take off whenever they feel like it. No sports league anywhere that I know of has empowered the players more than the NBA and when you let the employees call the shots they are going to in most cases do the bare minimum.
Load management is the excuse they use but it's pretty rare to see one of the star players in the game today playing more than 75% of the games, and you tune in to see them not their back ups.

Well - for one, it's not even real basketball. I'm surprised the players even make the attempt to dribble the ball anymore. It's not like they're ever gonna get called for travelling. What do they allow now? Six or eight "gather steps" on the way to the goal?
NBA hasn't been worth watching since Larry Bird retired.

Haven’t watched since Stockton to Malone ended.
Their pick and roll was an artform. Very fun to watch.

Some of it prob has to do with the fact that they travel all over the place without getting called, they flop everywhere, and don’t play defense.
My dad says you don't get back on defense and you only try during the playoffs.

I used to watch it long ago but lost interest. Their season is endless and is just too much. I only look at college basketball now, and that has cooled down for me also.

My viewership didn't drop off 48%, it's simply under "load management"..
Give me six months, I'll be there for the Playoffs. Until then, I'll still catch some Chuck and Shaq post games..
Sorry, but Field of 68 has now taken my late-night hour recap time.

This chart is why. It’s boring to watch when every team plays what amounts to the same style.
The rule changes in the early 2000s precipitated this. It was fun watching the Warriors boat race the league for a few years but now that everyone else has essentially caught up, it’s become as interesting as watching running.

Downfall started in my opinion win Kobe’s destroying the Lakers Dynasty in 2004 after the rape allegations and everything his teammates went through for him.
He is revered way too much for a guy that was a total POS teammate and human being.
Next was LeBron and the start of the Super Team eras. It killed the idea of supporting your home team and started the player focused support and cheap titles. Players didn’t earn them anymore by building championship teams. They just went and bought them by joining up with their buddies.
Add in that the players are all too buddy buddy now and you lose the competitive nature.
Just not a fun game to watch anymore.

Probably started with this.
Then you add in that mid-season tournament and star players sitting for "load-management" bullshite makes for the terrible product that is being put on the floor. Nobody wants to see it. We'll just do like MLB and wait till the playoffs. Nobody cares to watch this bullshite on a daily basis.

NBA from 2-3 decades ago was all about rivalries, players didn't like each other, etc. The NBA and ESPN did an amazing job of stoking those fires to keep people interested in whatever game was on TV that night.
Fans picked their sides and they hated the other guy, or the other team, etc., and they thought that their favorite players felt the same way they did.
Then with social media, it became much easier to "see" these players off the court.. and then everyone realized that they're all just best friends, going to strip clubs at 4AM before tipping off in a game 12 hours later that you paid $100 to see two rivals kill each other. Except now you know that they don't actually hate each other -- its just you on your couch, filled with rage, watching 90 minutes of commercials to see 60 minutes of gametime, of two players that are probably in each others' weddings

Probably because I can't watch the Hawks on tv because of dumbass tv deals. Same goes for the Braves. How in 2024 it has to be like jumping through hoops to watch your local pro teams on tv is the dumbest thing ever. Stupid way to grow your leagues. Guess the easy money is more important.

One and done college rule is part of it. In the old days college basketball fans would get a 3 to 4 year introduction to the players, some of whom were already legendary by the time they were drafted thanks to epic final fours. Kareem, Walton, Magic, Bird, Jordan all had that in common. The loss of that is why I don't watch college or NBA.

1. Whiny arse divas that flop
2. SJW BS
3. It’s turned into a slam dunk and 3 point contest
4. Seasons are way too long
5. All but the last few minutes of each game are boring as hell

Why do you think the NBA audience has disappeared?
NBA regular season is a horrible product to watch. The holiday games were ok for a while, but the big players hardly play anymore. The playoffs are about the only thing I use to watch. But even that isn't really worth my time. I just don't like the style of the game, and the players, i just can't connect with them.

That’s really what it is in my opinion. As a right-winger, it’s fun to think the NBA got too woke and now they’re paying the price, but I don’t really think that’s what it is. I think it’s just that the league doesn’t have any interesting new players or teams right now that captures people’s attention.
It's this and advancing the game to a point where old fans act like old men and create narratives to hate it, because its different than the shittier version they saw in their developmental stage that they accepted as the best version of the sport. So they mistake "not playing defense" because they grew up in an era where teams refused to try on offense, for example. These people refuse to watch b/c of old man-itis.
The problem with the younger generation is that they don't have to watch the games anymore, with social media.
