thought it was another poster who was stuck there. What thread am I thinking of?
You might be thinking about our poster who was stuck in China during the Covid outbreak. I really do think the OT helped get that guy home

But you’re retired yet also have a job? And retired but trying to have a baby? And your wife has (what I assume to be) an adult son?
Not retired yet, one more year left. I was out of work for about a year and a half and was trying to start retirement a little early but that didn't work out. I'm 55, have two grown kids from first marriage and a three year old with the new wife. We were going to try for a second baby but the war put an end to that. My wife is 13 years younger than me. Her son, that is living with me now, just turned 18.

My health isn't ideal, but I'm doing okay. I started to feel dizzy, so I went to lay down on the floor but apparently didn't make it all the way. I must have passed out, half way down and face planted. I came through to a puddle of blood, that had collaguated. So it must have been a minute. I yelled for the wife to come upstairs, she saw the blood and freaked out, yelling for her mom. I talked to them a bit and went out again. She said my eyes were wide open, face covered in blood and they couldn't get any signs of life. The wife and MIL are both doctors. The host we were staying with was also a nurse, she really freaked out. MIL did CPR on me and I remember herslapping me in the face yelling my name. I came through and recovered from there. Usually getting slapped by MIL is a bad thing, but this time it worked out.

What part of Canada did your SIL and family move to
Calgary. I just came back from a visit myself. Drove the whole way.
SIL doesn't speak English very well but is cleaning houses. 14 year old niece wants to be a tik tok star. They also have a three year old. BIL is driving trucks.
This poor guy, left Ukraine to Russia when the war started in 2014. Had to find a way to provide for his family, which started with him washing cars. Left Russia in 2022 to Lithuanian, and had to find a job there. Then was able to make it to Canada and had to find a job there. Really good guy and very intelligent.

Thanks. That's good to hear about her father; I think we were all pretty worried when he insisted on staying behind (IIRC?).
Good luck to all.
Good luck to all.

Agree with other posters on this one. To casually just drop this in as an afterthought. Basically i died was brought back .Like this just happens all the time. Glad you got your Family out but dang sounds like you had a few moments in that story that could have ended real bad.

That's where we were. Came back late yesterday afternoon. Was there since last Thursday. Calgary is a beautiful city. Reminds me a bit of Denver in that it's on the high Plains in the shadow of the Rockies. Although it isn't as close to the front range as Denver is.
We went to Drumheller and the Dinosaur museum on Friday. Then we did the downhill carting in the Olympic village on Saturday before heading west to Golden, BC.They put it on the old downhill skiing slope. The old scoreboard is still standing on the side of the hill 36 years later.
We stayed in Golden with my mom's life-long best friend and her husband from Saturday till Wednesday. They live in the valley between the Columbia and Rocky Mountains and to say the view is breathtaking is an understatement. I can see why she.married her husband 20 years ago (who is a local) and has never moved back to the States. We had an absolute blast. Saw mountains, raging rivers, hot springs, glaciers and nature in general. We rode the first 2/3's of the Icefields Parkway on our way back to Calgary on Wednesday. The views will leave you speechless. And the people are so nice, laid-back and gracious. We could follow their example here. That area of Canada is absolutely gorgeous. We didn't want to leave.
We are definitely going back in 2-3 years max. This next time we will do more of Calgary and the upper 1/3 of the Glacier Highway (up to Jasper) and if course stay with my mom's best friend for the balance of the trip.
I would love to drive the whole way there. How long did it take?

It's about 33 hours from my city. I left at midnight and did 19 hours the first day with the 3 year old sleeping for half of it. Made it the Colorado, Wyoming border.
We went to Banff national park which is about 1.5 hours north of Calgary. Johnston is a nice waterfall hike if you go.
Stopped at a dinosaur musuem and hot springs on the way back in Thermopolis, Wyoming. My daughter loved it. Scenic drive in as well.

You left from Louisiana, right? Distance between cities is giving me 37 from here south of Atlanta.
You went the route I originally looked at(40 out to Amarillo, then 287 to 70, 70 to Denver, then 25 to Billings, 90 to US 89, which turns into Hwy.2 when it crosses into Alberta). Then DBC had the route basically going out 70 to KC, then 29 to Bismarck before cutting up into Saskatchewan and hitting Canada 1 west of Regina and straight to Calgary.
We drove into Banff on our way to Golden but it was a Saturday and it was packed. Don't even ask about the road back to Lake Louise.
We've done Wyoming twice. Saratoga. I would like to go to Thermopolis next time we are out there.

Took the longer way back. I wanted to drive through Yellowstone. From there we headed to Thermopolis. Not much of a city but drive in was really nice. We drove through this valley with steep mountains on both sides. Thermal pools were nice and pretty good dinosaur museum. They actually do some digs for real bones but only certain time of the year.
