How do you know they are not innocent???? Just because you travel to another country doesn’t mean you should be treated like they have. Now Griner did commit a crime.

During the Women’s USA basketball game the announcers were talking about how Griner was “wrongly detained” in Russia. She had drugs on her. It’s not disputed. That’s not wrongly detained.

Just because it’s not something that would be a big deal here doesn’t mean it’s not in another country.

Hell we just had people bring ammo into another country and be arrested. They weren’t wrongfully detained either. It was stupid, but that is that countries laws.

I couldn't open the Bloomberg article because I'm not registering for their website, so here's a tweet with more details.

The RIA news agency is also reporting that four Russians jailed in the United States have disappeared from the database.

The prisoners are Vinnik, Maxim Marchenko, Vadim Konoshchenko, and Vladislav Klyushin.

I don't know anything about these Russians.

You were so excited to use this line. It doesn't even work here.

Prisoner swaps and arresting people/spies for leverage has been around for a very long time. Of course it will keep happening.

Probably so. But you say “people/spies” like they’re the same thing. It’s hard, but we need to be firmer and tougher IMO. We’re just incentivizing the bad guys at this point.

What are you talking about?

Evan was an accredited (by Russia) journalist with the WSJ. He was working there, certainly by choice, but he wasn't breaking any laws.

Do you not know anything about his situation?

I have a feeling this guy was doing some spy shite. Evan is just a WSJ reporter though.

Nicely timed by the government.

It is also very illuminating that they did not disclose the other side of the trade.

Especially when you consider the person posting the "gotcha" attempt is always a part of the group he's attempting to "get." He posts on the OT just like the rest of us.

Are we having to give up a Russian serial killer like when the WBNA player was exchanged for the biggest illegal gun runner the world had ever seen?

I think what he (or she) is trying to say is that as a westerner, particularly an American, you should know the risk you take by traveling to Russia. That risk being you could be wrongfully detained and imprisoned on sham charges ALL for the sole purpose of being used as leverage in negotiations for prisoner swaps whereby Russia seeks to get back some of their legitimate criminals (if you assume the USA isn't engaging in the same tactics). Thus, the logic being the US telling the prisoners "Sorry. You took the risk of traveling there. We aren't going to allow Russia to use you as leverage to get their criminals back. Make better decisions."

If you are doing a trade analysis like in a baseball trade, the US gets back a few people. Those people and their families are thrilled and grateful. But otherwise there is no tremendous benefit to the US as a whole. From Russia's perspective they get back criminals/spies which they can use as a net negative to the western world.

I'm not advocating one way or the other. But I can see how some Americans would not be terribly thrilled about this because Russia likely "wins" the trade...secure with the knowledge they can just do it again, and again, and again.

Evan Gershkovich is a WSJ reporter - they've been constantly covering his story for over a year. This is great news.

That meaning what? Are we to bomb the Kremlin every time they arrest a journalist for snooping around something they don’t want them doing?

His story is strange and he received a Big Chicken Dinner from the Corps. I don't think he was doing anything sanctioned, but he holds like 3 passports and was probably pretending to be Jason Bourne.
