Schlumberger to hire almost 600 in La; moving into the old Hummer plant in Shreveport

Shreveport desperately needs this....that town is in serious trouble right now, and the entirety of north Louisiana is losing population.
I hope it goes well. Wonder what they will be building there exactly, but they are leasing about 1 million square feet of enclosed factory space. So presumably it will be a pretty big operation.

SIAP. Louisiana rarely gets good economic news in the past 7-8 years. Thought this might brighten someone's day, especially if you are from Shreveport.
Schlumberger is probably a more stable company with better compensated employees than the car companies or Amazon's DC staff that might have otherwise leased out that space.

SHREVEPORT, LA. — Los Angeles-based Industrial Realty Group (IRG) has signed offshore drilling giant Schlumberger Ltd. to a 1 million-square-foot industrial lease in Shreveport. The tenant will join Hyundai Glovis, Pratt Paper and Thyssenkrupp Supply Chain Services at the 3.5 million-square-foot Shreveport Business Park. Schlumberger will occupy a portion of two buildings and utilize the site for high-tech manufacturing. The company’s $18.5 million investment is expected to create 596 new direct jobs, and Louisiana Economic Development estimates the project will result in an additional 749 new indirect jobs

Easy access via loop was undoubtedly a selling point

You probably won't get much response. Anything above I 10 is terra incognito to this board.

It’s North of US Hwy 190, you uncultured swine.
This experiment will end badly for the bergermeisters.

Nice to see a boost to the economy of southern Arkansas

The OT talks a lot of smack about south Louisiana. That area is far from perfect, but it has also been carrying the state from an economic growth standpoint for over a decade now (Lake Charles and Baton Rouge in particular).
I'd hate to see how the OT talks about the far more economically depressed and structurally impoverished parts of Louisiana like Shreveport. It's gotten really bad there since the energy exploration in that region has slowed.
We've had some very rare, promising news for Alexandria and Shreveport in the past few weeks. I'm hoping it works out. I know both of those towns are basically off the map for so many people on this board.

They are far from stable.

One of the worst companies to work for

IDK. Probably.
It seems like the state's jobs training programs and incentives seem to lead to better outcomes for manufacturing and chemical processing than it does for tech. The companies that need access to a deep draft port and need to tap into the employee skillset that already exists in the area seem to stick around. We fail miserably with tech companies or industries that rely on rail/road infrastructure (where Louisiana really sucks).
It's oilfield services company, so it seems like something that would more likely be looking into south Louisiana. But since this particular plant will be durable goods manufacturing it is also arguably within Shreveport's wheelhouse too. Either way I'm glad that Louisiana is getting something. And Shreveport desperately needs the jobs.
We rarely get good economic news anymore in La. I do wish we could diversify a bit better though. I'm hoping we can use the battery material processing companies moving into Ascension/Iberville Parish now to attract an EV manufacturing company to Monroe, Opelousas, Hammond, or Alexandria. As car companies switch to EV's, they will probably replace older production lines in the midwest with newer, more efficient facilities somewhere else. Hopefully Louisiana can lure at least one of them.

They already have/had a big shop out there. I’m sure they’re scooping up the site for cheap. Either way, good news for Shreveport and the oilfield if they’re beefing up like that.
What schlumberger isn’t saying is that of the 600 employees, 200 of them will be H1B visa holders. It’s the blue way.

It's a crime-ridden shithole, but the area is booming economically.

The gains in south Louisiana have slightly offset the losses in north Louisiana.
It's to the point where we now grouping Pointe Coupee, East and West Feliciana, St. Helena, and even areas way out in Washington and Tangi Parish into the same congressional district as Monroe just so north Louisiana can retain two seats in congress.

Great news, I have long advocated going after these type jobs rather than throwing our dollars at Hollywood.
Good for Shreveport and good for my state.

I like Shreveport’s typography, layout and many of its neighborhoods. Not to mention the outdoor activities available. Sad that it has seen such an economic and demographic shift to rival Jackson, MS over the past 20 years.
Here’s a talk Peter Zeihan did in Shreveport. Pretty interesting.

This is often overlooked. Shreveport also has some of the best road infrastructure in the State. I’m not saying all of it is smooth, some parts of 20 are rough as hell, but it’s easy to get around….20/49, 220/3132 loop, nice parkways on both sides of river, new Barksdale AFB gate off of 20/220 interchange, etc.
