the most "mission essential" job in the US is long haul driver. I give them a lot of grace, from having their ol' lady cheat on them, to banging lot lizards, to being addicted to nicotine and caffeine and pissing in bottles just so I can get my Amazon deliveries in 3 hours. God Bless You Mr OTR Driver.
My dad trucked in his later years, took mom on the road and I watched the house. He could back a trailer in with a few inches of leeway to work with. Lots of respect for my old man. I spent enough time managing my businesses receiving department to know that the days of respect are gone. Mfers who cant speak English, cant do basic maneuvers, or this black lady who refused to do a single lane back in because she shouldn't have to do a skilled back in since it risks her record.
We still got some good ol boys doing the job well but we've allowed a skilled position to be plagues by incompetent minorities who accept lower pay, and we pay the price with road deaths and on site incompetence. One thing is for sure, the dispatchers couldn't care less.

the bigger issue is when a truck goes to pass another and then the other truck seems to speed up. To me, if you're going slow enough that another truck feels the need to pass, let up on the accelerator for a moment to allow them to get on around you.
This goes for every vehicle on the road, especially those that don't use cruise controll and massively fluctuate their speeds when people go to pass. They are usually on their phone or doing something else. Very dangerous and frustrating.

You can thank bill board lawyers for the top speed governors.

Drivers are monitored for insurance purposes

Driver right here. These are the issues. Most all trucks are governed between 68-72. Top speed is greatly determined by hill grade and load weight. So you have all of these trucks running basically the same speed but different weight. One guy goes fast downhill, then drags uphill etc. It’s not as simple as “just let up and let them pass”, because you will lose momentum and then be a bigger problem for traffic dragging up the next hill. Just think restrictor plate racing in NASCAR.
On top of this, trucks have cameras and other assorted tattletale’s that can get you fired with the quickness, following distance, hard breaks, sudden lane changes, speeding etc.
in summary, greedy lawyers and insurance rates are the root of the problem. Most drivers are paid by the mile and they want to be moving faster than you, believe me.
The last thing I will point out is the car that speeds up when you get beside them and then slows down two miles later is worse than an illegal immigrant to me.

Working in logistics for years has made me change my mind about the drivers that take forever to pass. I would rather it be them than a "turban torpedo" that seems to have no regard for life.

This is where the focus should be. It's scary sometimes to think about who you are driving 65 mph besides or who is coming at you.
Last month while returning from ATL about half way between Chattanooga and Monteagle at about 1:30am the semi in front of us lost two trailer wheels. Rim and all. We were lucky to drive right between them. After nearly running another car deep in to the median the driver (Indian) pulled over. I took photos and called the Tennessee highway patrol.
Scary af!

If they are speed limited, given the abilities of modern electronics, I wish something could be programmed to allow temporary bursts of power or speed so that a passing maneuver did not take 5 minutes.
If the truck in the right lane would slow down for just a moment to let them pass we would not need these bursts of power (NOX, I guess, is what you wish they had) you speak of.

Insurance companys dictate the speed of said company's trucks. On pedal they get anywhere from 63 to 65 sometimes less. Cruise control would be up to 3 mph more. One company i know is 64 mph top speed. As said above 68 is top speed while on cruise control. Some get 70 mph. Most all of these modern trucks are equipped with radar and they know the speed of the truck ahead of them or any vehicle for that matter once they are inside of a 6 second window behind them if they(trucker) is faster or approaching. If a truck is topped out at 66 and another gets 68, the trucker will know this because of his radar reading the semis speed, he will get as close as possible then switch for what seems like a 3 minute lane switch then back to right lane once they are clear of the truck they are passing. This isnt an issue for me at all , the guy is working for a living. The problem for me is when a semi will ride the left lane and not move where he should be, which is the middle or right lane. The "no trucks over 6 wheels" in the left lane is heavily enforced in Georgia, sadly not enforced hardly in other states and surely not in Florida. So yes you got alot of semi trucks all going different speeds that are close in what their trucks can get speed wise.
Also most trucks have everything electronic wise with 24/7 cameras and recording clips evertime there is a sudden brake, roll thru a stop sign, following distance is too close etc, not too mention most large carriers can carry up to 80 thousand pounds in the dry vans they pull. Most people dont realize that those semis are killing machines, an 80 thousand lb missile. This profession requires good basic common sense, above average intelligence and lots of rest to be running an 11 hr clock of driving time per day.

I see people daily in regular vehicles that can't seem to pass a semi going up a hill. Almost like rubberneckers slowing down for accidents.
The dumbasses create long lines and then those people slow way down, then people come flying up in the right lane and cut into the left lane. This makes the retards in the left lane slow down more.

5 minutes? Consider yourself lucky. Traveling between LA and Brazoria County, TX regularly, that is a miracle. Those assholes deserve a special place in the afterlife.

I firmly believe a truck driver being in the left lane for any stretch of time should result in a jail sentence.

I know someone who drives cross country and yes most of them have governors and are set at 68MPH max.
Why doesn't the truck being passed slow down a little to expedite this? Ya know, professional courtesy and such.

It's annoying. A lot of trucks are governed at 65. A good truck driver will slow down when being passed by another truck, but truck drivers are only about as good as the average car driver.

Personally think there should be NO passing option for trucks
And dedicated lane should have been done years ago

And why do trucks shift from the right to left lane, regardless on whether or not there’s traffic in the left lane, when there is a vehicle on the shoulder? They will run whomever is in the left lane into the median. Is this some law or unwritten thing?
