My breaking point was/is potato chips. At the local Kroger on a regular day a bag of potato chips is $6.49 per bag. Couple days later, on sale, 4 bags for $8. Same exact bags of chips. Now is that the chip manufacturer or Kroger? Regardless both are gouging the hell out of us. If you make a profit at $2 a bag, why in the hell do they cost 6.49 regularly priced?

Most likely clearing inventory before they expired.

Good. Last I checked a 12 pack of any major soda was around $8. Pre-COVID it was $4-4.50.

OP voted for and supports that, but he is not part of the problem, you are for pointing this out.

These major corporations are just a function of the market they find themselves in. It's not their fault they're businesses made to find the best profits they can. That's natural.

Don't misdirect your anger about WHY THIS INFLATION is so high. We all know why.

A company exists to profit. If you don't like it, don't buy it. That literally is the power of the free market. It will cause them to lower again.

But if it's worth it to you to buy it, why should they sell for a cheaper price?

Someone noticed. We're on page two of an LSU board discussing a French supermarket’s decisions.

But nobody noticed. People are commenting on the article, not that they were shopping for Pepsi and were shocked to not find it.

I don't really get this. Don't the stores just sell the brands at a margin and let the labels compete against each other? Unless the brands aren't moving because they are overpriced relative to their competition, how does it effect the merchant one way or the other?

I'm sure there's a massive amount of nuance I'm missing. Anyone have some insight?

These stores have a finite amount of shelf space and therefore need to get the most revenue per square foot of shelf/store space. So a product that isn't selling is not worth keeping on the shelves...so they reduce how much space they allocate to it or just don't sell it.

So there's a 1% chance this is virtue signaling and a 99% chance it's driven by revenue (or lack of revenue).

I've always thought that Pepsi was cheaper than Coke products. Interesting.

We have a gas station here that only sells Pepsi products. Threw me off because I can't recall ever going to one in my life that didn't have both Coke and Pepsi products.

Things will never go down in cost significantly from here out.

Nope. Some prices may go down, but the administration and fed have said they want to get back to an inflation rate of 2% annually...so that's 2% inflation on the current prices. Prices going back to where they were a few years ago would be called deflation.

Manufacturers are always price gouging. I spoke to a manufacturer a few weeks ago. He told me the cost of every single ingredient he used to make his product has steadily increased since Covid. Nothing has come down, but they all keep going up.

So let’s say this is his formula that used to cost $9 to produce:
A - $2
B - $3
C - $4

Now it costs $14 to produce just for the ingredients:
A - $4
B - $5

Yes, its all about how much gouging they can get away with. Always.

Yes, things have gone up. But they have gone up generally 20-30%. But prices for retail goods after gouging have sometimes as pointed out gone up 100%+. It doesn't add up. In your instance the $2 item went to $4, when it should instead be $2.50 now. That $1.50 extra is the BS price gouging, and then as pointed out companies love to throw deals around.

Its all marketing and business plans. But I don't understand why they can't just charge $2.75 all the time instead of charging $4 most of the time and then bogo $4.

Shoutout to Nola Discount Pharmacy who still do the 3 for $15 Coke product 12 pack

Usually at least once every three weeks Dollar General does Coke 12 pks 3/$15 and they have a $2 off coupon you can use and if you buy them on Saturday they have a $5 off $25 purchase every week. These are their digital coupons. So you can get six 12 pks for $23 which is cheaper than the pre-COVID price for cases of Coke at Walmart. Their price was over $8 before COVID. The negative, of course, is having to walk into a Dollar General but the closest one to us is actually pretty nice.

These prices don't bother me, but I might drink 2-3 soft drinks a year. I don't know how people can drink that crap everyday. I will just consider myself lucky that I don't have any desire to drink them.

That’s all a lie. Not who you spoke with, but manufacturers and suppliers. There is zero reason for these insane increases for everything, not just food. Just to be greedy and an opportunity to price gauge. I wish our gov would step in, and that’s saying a lot.

Government caused inflation, inflation caused a lot of the price increase, and companies figured they could raise prices even more and blame inflation.

If a store stops selling Pepsi, would anyone even notice?

I was in a Jewell Osco a while back and the guy in front of me had a bunch of 2 liter Pepsi's - specifically the Diet Caffeine Free variety.

I don't understand that. That stuff probably tastes like hair spray.
