Telehealth orthodontics company SmileDirectClub shuts down

SmileDirectClub, the international direct-to-consumer dentistry and orthodonistry company that sold teeth aligners, has shut down less than three months after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The telehealth company, founded in 2014, said in a statement posted on its website Friday that it “has made the incredibly difficult decision to wind down its global operations, effective immediately.” It thanked customers for their “support and letting us improve over 2 million smiles and lives.”
Because a typical SmileDirectClub teeth-straightening course takes 4-6 months, some existing customers may be stranded in the middle of treatment. The company encouraged customers to consult local dentist offices if they wish to continue their care.
SmileDirectClub had once heralded itself as an affordable alternative to traditional orthodontics with a mission “to democratize access to a smile each and every person loves by making it affordable and convenient for everyone.” Its aligners cost around $2,000, while clear aligners purchased through more traditional routes at brick-and-mortar medical offices can cost around $5,000.
While customers will not receive new aligners to finish out their treatment course, those who financed their SmileDirectClub plans “are expected to continue to make all monthly payments until payment has been made in full per the terms of our SmilePay program,” the company said. It added that refund eligibility will be determined as the next steps in the bankruptcy process are ironed out.
SmileDirectClub did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.
The Nashville-based company, which had major retailers like Walmart and CVS carrying its products, announced its bankruptcy filing in late September, saying that the restructuring would “allow SmileDirectClub to thrive as an international oral care leader for many years to come” and emphasizing its intention “to continue to provide affordable and accessible oral care to its customers without disruption.”
On Friday, SmileDirectClub took part in a scheduled hearing “to consider conditional relief” at US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, according to court documents.

Rumor online is that they accidentally sent out everyone's salaries to an employee with a name similar to the CEO and she realized she was getting screwed along with all the other employees. So she sent the email out to everyone and it caused a mass resignation
ETA I've been bamboozled by the Chinese misinformation app, none of that is true
Although lol at "please continue paying us even though we're not serving you anymore"

They're telling you they're gonna frick you before they frick you. Kind of have to respect that.
Not really. That's slimy as hell.

If I’m a lawyer I’m starting the class action now. Services not rendered. I’m not paying you.

Hell I started with the very legitimate Invisalign and even that fricked yo my teeth. Had to end up getting traditional braces, which I should’ve gotten from day one. Luckily my orthodontist didn’t charge me more for it.
No way I’d have gone with SmileDirectClub

Smile direct club was the shite
Pay $1800 and go to a strip mall and the Popeyes employees scan your teeth then in a month they send you braces
Not sure where I’ll get a new retainer from if I ever need one

You'd spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of man hours on a class action lawsuit against a BK company? The secured creditors won't even get whole. Even if you get a judgment -- which you probably can't even get while they're in BK -- you won't be able to collect on it because you're an unsecured creditor.

If you don't pay them, you're an anti-dentite.

I'm gonna guess that their "Smilepay" financing plan was actually done through a 3rd party bank or finance company.
The bank/finance company still wants their loan repaid since they would have paid SmileDirectClub up front and will ding your credit just like if you stopped making payments on a credit card.

They used "offshore" orthodontists and people had some SERIOUS medical issues. They were drowning in lawsuits from it. You can really frick up your face/jaw/mouth with bad orthodontic treatment. A lot of people had to get oral maxillofacial surgery.

Nah man I found the dentist that did mine. I imagine she was just signing off but she lives in Louisiana and is hot

Got SmileDirect for my son which fixed his teeth nicely! Not sure where we'll find retainers now though to continue to keep his teeth straight. Process was super easy and straightforward. They gave us the name of the supervising dentist which I believe was either in Baton Rouge or New Orleans. Never heard from him but never needed to.

Obviously I’m not a lawyer. Idk what you call it. But people shouldn’t be forced to keep paying for something that they aren’t receiving from a bankrupt company.

Wow. I went through them for my aligners and it was a great experience. Glad I got thru the treatment and then got my permanent one (wear it at night), but it's supposed to be replaced every 6 months. What TF am I gonna do now?
There's a new one on the market called Byte. They should try to convert SDC's user database and make bank.
I still standby it as a great product. I heard the horror stories on here but I assume that's from all the OT dentists afraid someone's taking some of their McMansion money. There's NO reason to pay some slapdick $7K for the same product unless you like throwing $$$ out the window.
