And it goes back much further than 800 years. Muslims invaded and had control over parts of India over 1200 years ago.
The Brits partitioned them based on religion into East and West Pakistan, and India after WWII. East Pakistan later became Bangladesh.

Yep. According to Wiki, India and China are way ahead of everyone else (1.4 billion each), followed by the US (342 million), Indonesia (279), and Pakistan (244).
