Mark Longo has just revealed that the New York Department of Environmental Conservation euthanized his cherished pet squirrel, Peanut. This innocent creature was taken from him, where he had lovingly raised it since it was a baby, after its mother got hit by a car.
Mark used the squirrel’s viral popularity to raise funds for animal sanctuaries.
Imagine, without any legal basis like a search warrant, the government barged into his home, stole Peanut, and in just 48 hours, ended the life of this harmless, beloved pet.

Um.... what the hell is wrong with them up there? They don't have enough problems... so they have time to worry about a dude who raised a pet squirrel from when it was a baby?
What, exactly, was their reasoning? Whoever made that call needs his/her arse beat just on general principle.

To be fair, there was a couple in Starks LA that rescued a baby deer and LDWF found out about it and took the deer and killed it because the people had taken it inside their house and were bottle-feeding it.
The people even begged to just let the deer go but LDWF said it had to be put down.
How helping wildlife turned into a citation for one Starks couple

Probably something stupid like... it's illegal in New York to own a squirrel, and since this squirrel could no longer survive on its own in the wild, they did the humane thing for the squirrel. By killing it.

That's one of the most particularly infuriating things about nanny states like California and New York.
The people who try to do the right thing and play by the rules are the ones they bend over backwards to frick. The people who brazenly break the law and run wild get to do so without consequences.
You're more likely to get in trouble in San Francisco for having an improper garden in your front yard than if you were shitting in front of city hall while shooting up heroin.
They bully easy targets and ignore real problems.

That makes me sick. New York has an ungodly number of criminals who need the woodchipper treatment and they choose to execute a pet squirrel.

Lots of states have laws against domesticating wild animals. Rescue and rehab places that take in hurt wild animals have to be licensed and file many reports on the animals they rehab.
I saw this dude on Tiktok and he had the squirrel for years so I'm not sure why it was suddenly an issue.
Guess if you are going to domesticate a wild animal then it's best not to spread it on social media

Same sort of thing happened here... some guy had a "pet" deer that stayed in his yard (well, like several acres with a high fence)... he fed it and what not... TWRA made him take the fences down or something like that or they just took it and relocated it to the woods.. and it got hit by a car the very next day.

You run across stories like this from states across the country fairly often. New York doesn't stand alone on this one.

Stupid bureaucratic BS. It comes across the desk of any of 99 other employees... they laugh and throw it in the trash. Then you get the one guy with little man syndrome or something who simply cannot let it stand. And, by God, he's going to do something about it because, well, he's got the "power".

Did someone at least eat the thing?
Posted on 11/1/24 at 8:28 pm to MemphisGuy
They had to kill it in order to save it.

Glad I was raised a country boy and got to have all kinds of pets. Had a coon named racket we picked up off the side of the road by his dead mother. He used a litter box and we had him hunt crawfish in a kiddy pool.
