It took me 37 years but dammit I did it! I finally found a short and simple video and it’s amazing how many other videos there are out there that make it so damn complicated.

When I was a kid I taught myself how for horse shows. Prior to that my dad had to tie it loosely and I’d slip it over my head. I was so excited when I could do it myself

Like, a basic four in hand/schoolboy knot? It’s objectively easier than tying your shoes

Now tying a fricking bow tie, on the other hand… I have to look it up again every time I put on a tux…

I used to wear one daily for years. On the rare occasion that I wear one now, I usually still nail it on the first try.

Want to experience something really weird? Instead of tying it in front of a mirror, have someone hold up a front facing phone camera. Because the camera won't "mirror" the image the way your brain is used to seeing, not only will it make it very difficult to tie the tie (especially if you tie something more complicated than a four in hand), but when you step back in front of a mirror, your brain will still be broken. You have to step away and come back a few minutes later once your brain has reset

I actually don't like bow ties and only wear one with a tux. With that said, every once in a while my brain will decide there is some skill that it simply wants to possess, and at some point, my brain decided that as a grown man who tries to dress well, I'm going to be able to tie my own fricking bow tie.

So here we are

I assume you have the Four In Hand down now it is time to move on to other knots and learning to match them with collar types:

Oriental
Kelvin
Windsor
Half Windsor
Prince Albert
Pratt
Balthus

Then you can go crazy with the next 4

Kelvin
Trinity
Van Wijk
Eldredge

The feeling I get is a wish to go back in time and strangle with a tie the idiot who made it fashionable for a man to tie a useless scrap of colorful cloth around his neck.

I used to wear one daily and got pissed off every time I put it on.

The knot to end all knots, in my opinion, unless you're looking to create conversation piece knots like the trinity, eldredge, etc.

The cravat at least served a purpose. The modern necktie is an unfortunate bastard child of men's fashion.

I left off the Murrel because IMO it looks stupid.

The knot to end all knots,

I occasionally tie a Pratt, but I don't like knots that leave inverted tails, which is why I never tie an Oriental/Simple knot. When the collar and tie allow I prefer a half or full Windsor for symmetry and the perfect dimple they make.

Prime Owlie switcheroo formatted question.

And then changed to something like “How do you like to be tied up at the Adult Theater?”

The invert used to irk me, but ever since I started ordering my ties to custom lengths, it became a non issue as it only goes a few inches past the keeper. I used to tie a half Windsor, but I’ve moved almost exclusively to grenadine ties over the last few years, which tie a bit thicker, so I stay to the thinner knots now, as it basically ties like a half Windsor.

What sort of male doesn’t know how to tie a tie until age 37?
