The copyright on Mickey Mouse expires in 2024

Frankly the protections around it have been extended out far too long. I get Disney wanting to keep its most valuable intellectual/artistic asset under wraps and not enter the public domain but in general it seems to be far too long. What are y’all’s thoughts?
In the case of Mickey Disney is still actively using it so to me I can see that being different than copyrights that have been dormant for decades. Artists feed from ideas and creations of the past and even if not ripping a character off outright I can see them drawing inspiration from one but can’t because they’d run afoul of the copyright.

The Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act – also known as the Copyright Term Extension Act, Sonny Bono Act, or (derisively) the Mickey Mouse Protection Act[1] – extended copyright terms in the United States in 1998. It is one of several acts extending the terms of copyrights.[2]
Following the Copyright Act of 1976, copyright would last for the life of the author plus 50 years, or 75 years for a work of corporate authorship. The 1976 Act also increased the extension term for works copyrighted before 1978 that had not already entered the public domain from 28 years to 47 years, giving a total term of 75 years.[3]

There is still a lot of protection afforded to Disney. The modern Mickey is not the Steamboat Willy Mickey and there is also trademark and trade dress.

Money talks and the politicians have always and will will keep listening. Just shows how corrupt lawmakers and lobbyists are. Disney keeps getting copyright laws re-written all because they can afford the politicians, now imagine what laws/politics get bought that you don't know about?

The biggest thing you need to know about Disney and its copyrights is the fact that they traded Al Michaels to NBC for the rights to a very obscure Walt Disney cartoon.
I'd say they would find a way to get the law changed again but they screwed up bad this year. GOP governor in Florida and a GOP controlled Congress are not going to do them any favors. And even Joey, Nancy, and Chucky aren't going to spend the required time and capital to push their party even further into that mess now that they have some hope of only barely losing Congress.

Gays will ruin it and just start using Mickey Mouse as some type of pride symbol.
Just like they did with the rainbow.
Just like they did with the rainbow.

Yep. I was in high school and easily impressed but I just about cried when that aired.

"What's South Park? Do I own that?"
"No, not yet, sir!"

Here's what I would say to ABC and the Disney Corporation...

My opinion is it should be protected as long as the person or entity who invented it is still enjoying significant brand recognition and revenues from the property. Mickey is one of the most recognizable characters of all time, the way I see it - good on Walt for creating an icon and his legacy should be able to retain it exclusively.

Just like they did with the word gay. Another word with a hundred and eighty degree difference in meaning from back in my day - cornhole. The guy that mows my property is the #1 male cornholer in Ark. I told him what is use to mean. He didn't know that.

Copyrights can/will be renewed.
Public domain occurs when the copyright holder/beneficiaries of the copyright don't renew...
This isn't really a thing...

I haven’t read up on this, what obscure Disney cartoon was it?

I’m curious myself, but if I had to guess it’s either the infamous “Song of the South,” or one of the pre-WW2 slightly pro-Nazi cartoons they put out.
