I remember staying at the one in Monroe as a kid when they held the southland basketball tournament in town.

I'll try again...
Family A was going on "Vacation" at the Holidome 3 or 4 miles from their house. Which isn't much of a vacation, but who cares.
Family B (my family) was freeloading on Family A several afternoons because we couldn't even afford a couple of rooms at Holiday Inn.
Unless your head was completely up your arse, even more than usual for a 12 y/o boy, you had to be aware that this situation was kind of fricked up.

Have or had one in Shreveport. Indoor/outdoor pool
Pretty sure I stayed at it about 30 years ago for a soccer tournament. They were filming a movie at the pool, definitely not PG rated.

Navarre Beach
Stayed there the year before it got blown away. They brought in animals from the local zoo for the kids to look at.

They used to have a scaled down version of that in Kenner at Williams and Vets.
Back in the 1980s they used to have a popular restaurant and nightclub there. It was called the Jockey Club (Jefferson Downs was nearby) and all the waitresses used to wear skimpy jockey outfits.
The hotel is still there. It is something else now.

When I was about 12, we used to go over there from Metaire to swim when a friend's family used to go on "vacation" in Kenner, from Kenner.
People from New Orleans used to take beach vacations in Waveland, Pass Christian, Biloxi, etc. It’s like nobody knew before 1980 that beach places existed east of Mobile.

Good times up there long before it was a HI. I believe Copeland owned it for a while.

In 2005, my Aunt's (from NO) house in the Pass got wiped out by Katrina. I'm from NO.
I swear to God I had no idea there were several thousand people who lived in Pass Christian year round. As a kid, it seemed like everyone we knew was staying at a 2nd home or vacation rental.

I went to many wedding receptions on the top floor of that hotel.

Didn’t the Chehardys own it at one point?

Imagine if they were still around today.
They'd be like a marriage between Carnival Cruise line and Walmart on the first day of the month.

Never really got the appeal of Urnge Beach … but I grew up in the brown mud water of Louisiana and Mississippi beaches

Stayed at a hotel that used to be one of these in PA when we bought our house there. It was rebranded as another hotel at the time, and the atrium part in the middle was half closed off. The pool was still there, then what was left was a conference center. It was probably not a Holidome for a long time. It was the only place around that you could park a moving truck and would take large dogs.
Didn’t realize it at the time what a big deal these were in the 1980s.
That location closed as a hotel entirely during the pandemic. It’s been demolished and they are building a Menards there. I imagine that the atrium is expensive to heat in the winter, so it became a big headache eventually. You don’t see many hotels in that format anymore.

Houma did have one. Used to have a pretty nice New Year party. I knew people from down the bayou who would vacation there. Them and their kids had fun and that’s all that counted.

There was one in Shreveport.

Back then a car only lasted 80-100k miles so people didn't drive nearly as much.
Other than the if you were rich enough for the "big summer vacation" , I don't think people ventured nearly as very far as they do today.
Am I wrong?
