OptumRx, a pharmacy benefit manager owned by United Healthcare, is suing the MS Board of Pharmacy for releasing the results of an audit that shows Optum illegally paid independent (mom and pop) pharmacies at a lower rate than Optum's affiliated pharmacies.

I know several of you here like using independent pharmacies vs. walgreens, cvs, etc... I've also read here where some of you were told by your pharmacy they couldn't fill something due to being reimbursed below their cost of goods sold. PBMs like optum are the reason why. My store is routinely paid $25, $50, and sometimes hundreds below our cost on meds and that just isn't sustainable. What's worse is there have been bills before the MS legislators that would prevent this, but key members of the house and senate accept thousands in campaign contributions from PBMs and kill the bills.

My default stance is against Optum and United.

This sucks. Big Pharma needs to be dealt with.

Most consumers don’t even realize what a pbm is or does, but they certainly don’t have your best interest in mind or lower medication costs as they claim they do.

Well the mom and pops used to be cheaper than Walgreens.

I had a script for something. Walgreens didn’t have the correct oz but like the double the oz size that wasn’t covered by insurance. But that’s all they had and wanted to charge full price. Went to a mom and pops and got what I need for $15 instead of $100.

Everytime I go to CVS to pickup a prescription for my son I get pissed off. I told my wife she’s either going or the prescriptions are getting filled at our neighborhood pharmacy.

Cannot stand that place.

Is this even illegal? I would assume that it’s public record, is it not?

Yup, local pharmacy opened up right by my house. Not that we went there much, but they would even deliver to our house. They had to close because of this exact problem. I think they closed 3 locations and only have one main location now.

I post this example from one company, Centene, to show what MS politicians are taking, but there are a few Louisiana politicians on this report too. You can see the ones instrumental in killing bills or allowing them to die are getting paid more. Delbert Hosemann, Jason White, Hob Bryan, Briggs Hopson, Walter Michel, etc... either assign the committees or are all on committees where these bills go to die.

They love underpaying but don’t like the info being released that they’re doing it

They’re shameful and killing small businesses

Hope they get it fixed though before the Indy drug stores all close and then it will be too late

Pharmacists at CVS and Walgreens seem so miserable and sad too. Like they are annoyed that you had the audacity to come over there to fill a script.

My local pharmacy sees me walking in and starts ringing me up before I get to the counter. Sometimes they offer to drive it to my house.

These politicians have no problems telling their supporters one thing when campaigning and then doing entirely the opposite when in office. Why is it none of them seem to accept campaign money for promises to these companies and then doing the opposite? Why frick your supporters but never the campaign contributors?

It’s the most soul crushing job where you’re given no resources to succeed and you just hope you don’t make any errors due to their lack of staffing and help.

Exactly. It’s not the pharmacists or store level employees fault, but the fault of upper management. Metrics are increased while help is constantly cut. I feel for them.

I’m an independent pharmacy owner in MS. The BOP should have imposed the maximum penalty on Optum. That would have been millions. We were told at a meeting in November that officials in Jackson asked them not to…

United either denies claims or pays less than any other provider.

This is all you need to know when it comes to these guys.

MS is one of the few states I believe that don’t have any members of CVS/wags/big pharma on the state boards leadership. They’ve done that by design. They know the problem

Ultimately it doesn’t matter when the congressmen are on the take , they’ll kill any pbm reform despite the shouting from Indy owners as it would directly help them. They don’t care. It’s such a shame.
