Today it was announced that Walmart and MobileX will start offering new prepaid wireless plans starting at just $4.08 a month. If you want unlimited, you will be able to get that in a pay-as-you-go plan starting at just $14.88 a month.

These plans will start at $4.08 a month as you only pay for what you use, and extra data will roll over to the next month. You can also get unlimited talk and Text to Mexico and Canada as an add-on for $4.50 a month.
The $14.88 month plan includes unlimited talk and text along with 5GB of high-speed data. After that, your speed will slow down or you can pay an extra $2.10 per GB of high-speed data.
You can also get a $24.88-a-month plan with 30 GB of high-speed data.
It appears they will be operating off of Verizon towers as well. I'm all for this. Competition in the cell phone industry over the past several years has drastically cut rates for consumers.

This is one thing I was amazed that Elon Musk didn’t get involved with.

This might fail, their shoppers already get Obama phones for free.

I'm sure it will be loaded with Walmart ads and everything you search will be driven to the Walmart app.

Hmm, interesting pricing for the unlimited plan.
I've always wondered how these resellers manage to have these promotions that are cheaper than the company that actually provides the service.

I've come to this conclusion through absolutely nothing but my own anecdotal evidence, but I'm pretty sure these cheap prepaid cell services sell the hell out of your phone number and info to shady telemarketers. Why would they be able to give you the same service and same towers as Verizon for a fraction of the cost?

I have AT&T and my number isn’t protected from this.

Much better than the $170 a month I pay for two Verizon phones.

Same with me and Verizon. Everybody gets telemarketing calls. Im not talking about protecting you from them. I mean that these cheap companies are actively selling the info themselves.

Many MVNOs are given a much lower priority on the cell network than post-paid plans directly from Verizon and AT&T so you’ll get worse service on towers in busy areas like a sports events and parades.

Inject this into my veins.

You don’t want competition here. Honestly.
We need to force infrastructure improvements. And electrical grids are too expensive to have true “competition” and still have high reliability.
You want cheaper electricity? Then go nuclear. It’s safe, reliable, and very resistant to large cost swings. It’s over regulated as frick and everyone thinks every Nuc plant is Chernobyl. It is, by far, the cheapest and most efficient MW we can make.

yeah, it's basically a way for providers to sell service that isn't being used.
