One thing that really aggravates the piss out of me about student loan forgiveness is that they'll pay a bunch of folk's loans off but not do anything to actually fix the problem. They'd still let 18 year olds sign themselves into debt for a degree that doesn't have any demand.
I would support a world where only STEM related degrees are eligible for student loans and academic scholarships. Anything else, you pay for that shite out of pocket.

Well, law school takes any degree with good grades and LSAT. That’s why you see so many History or English majors, both which are useless on their own.

Just go general business or something else.
Far from the most useless degree, but I'm not a fan of a generic business degree. It's like being a jack of all trades and a master of none.
Your horizons are broadened when you choose a specialized degree like computer science or Accounting. Although, I'd argue that if you want to be a developer, you can get a lot further by foregoing college altogether and just hammer developing courses and figuring it out on your own. And a bachelor's in Accounting does not necessarily correlate to a huge salary by any means. Continued education to the CPA level is what is needed to get the upper salary ranges.

OT: everyone should be an engineer. if you aren't an engineer you should kill yourself immediately.
Also OT: why is there no good music or art anymore?
you’re gonna have to connect the dots for me here.
Are you suggesting that OT’s suspicion that modern music and art are declining in quality is directly linked to a supposed decrease in arts degrees—despite no actual decline in music or aetc degrees occurring?
another great point jclem.

Philosophy... the literal only thing you can do with that is become a professor...of philosophy.

Also some STEMs like Biology are useless without med school.
Yup. All STEMs aren’t equal. I say that as someone with a biomed science degree. Without a post grad school that degree and others like it (biology) are largely worthless.
Hell it’s not even needed to have a STEM degree to get into med school. You can take any degree since everyone has to take the pre med requisites. I actually wish I had majored in some useless degree but one that I liked a lot (like history) since it was my last chance to put a large amount of study into a non-medical topic

History
I’m making decent money now, but not due to the field of study.
Do you think you would be better and/or making more money at your current job with a degree specifically tailored to that job?

Have a niece she was very smart and she attended a very nice private university out here. Never asked my brother what her degree was in. Fast forward to graduation and I found out she got a degree to become a Librarian. I looked at my brother and went
He told me he tried talking her out of it. She has a job I believe at the local university in the media department. I am sure she is bringing in probably 35 K a year.
If she's good at her job and enjoys the job I don't see how this is a bad thing

True but trying to make it on that salary is not exactly going to be easy and like others have mentioned books and libraries are going the way of the dinosaur. Paying back student loans with that degree is another issue.

At the time he could only transfer if he majored in something OSU didn't offer. Are you sure that's what he got his masters in? If so does OSU not offer it?
If that was the reason for his major, allowing him to transfer to LSU, then it seems, at least for him, to have paid off pretty well.

I see that at OSU its called Arts & Sciences. You can get a masters in arts & science but they do not have liberal arts.. He just picked the easiest thing to get a masters in. I don't blame him.

About 20 years ago I knew a young gal who was studying photography and her after college plan was to hook up with, and marry a doctor or lawyer.
Didn't work out for her in the long run since she wasn't all that attractive and had not much earning potential to make a good living.
Useless degrees don't make for good career decisions.

I'm suggesting that the OT's obsession with only pushing "the trades" or "be an engineer" is not conducive for building a society that values the arts and music.
Conservatives (like much of the OT) led the Satanic Panic and other dumb crusades against music and art throughout history.
Conservatives don't push the envelope and make great music and art (as a broad general rule).
All your favorite artists and musicians are degenerate druggies and super liberal.

Many library science degree programs have migrated to "library & data science" or "library & information science". Fewer and fewer people work with books on shelves. More and more feed the AI beasts.

I tend to agree with that but Graphic Design or digital Art is an art degree but they are not useless. Lots of jobs out there for those skills.
Agreed. Dunno if it’s worth a four year degree on its own but a degree is not simply the skills in just what you’re majoring in, but expanding the mind and learning to think.

That’s what he’s saying.
Same way they kick and scream about eliminating the department of education when a record number of students can’t read or do basic math. You’re not supposed to connect those dots.

Undergrad bio, chem, etc degrees are mostly “useless” without further education.
